Speechifying tries Tapeta

Speechifying looks primed and ready to defeat eight other Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares in the 6 1/2-furlong, $75,000 Malvern Rose for 3-year-olds and up Thursday at Presque Isle Downs.

Speechifying, winner of 6 of 14 races last year and with earnings of more than $291,000, will be trying for her first win for her new connections, Puglisi Racing LLC, Steve Klesaris, and Ruby Stables. Trained by Klesaris, Speechifying has had one race this year, the $75,000 Power by Far at Penn National, which was restricted to Pa.-breds. Sent off as the 7-10 favorite in the six-furlong Power by Far, Speechifying was gaining late to run second, beaten 1 3/4 lengths.

In her final race last year, she won the $250,000 My Juliet at Philadelphia Park on Sept. 29. She was purchased privately after that race for an undisclosed amount.

"She has trained well at Fair Hill, and we are looking forward to running on the synthetic at Presque Isle," Klesaris said. "She may have needed one in her last, and I think she is ready to go now. It will be one of the few times we get to face Pa.-breds over a synthetic surface. She seems to train better over the synthetic than dirt, so we are excited to see her race over it."

The Fair Hill training track in Maryland has the same Tapeta Footings surface as Presque Isle Downs. Jeremy Rose will come in to ride Speechifying.

Mac N Mayo, trained by Mike Rogers, will try to upset Speechifying in the Malvern Rose. In her first out this year for her new connections, Mac N Mayo won a nonwinners-of-three open allowance, posting a lifetime-high Beyer Speed Figure of 94 and making it 3 wins in 3 attempts over the Presque Isle surface. Scott Spieth retains the mount.

Jet Away Jane, winner of a pair of $75,000 stakes earlier in the year, comes off a third in the six-furlong My Juliet at Philadelphia Park on May 24. Trained by Tom Miller, Jet Away Jane will be ridden by Angel Rodriguez and should have a say in the outcome.

* In the $75,000 Presidentialaffair at 6 1/2 furlongs for Pa.-bred 3-year-olds and up, Whistle Pig rates a slight edge over his eight rivals. A fast-closing second in the $75,000 Roanoke at Philly Park in his last out at six furlongs, Whistle Pig won the $75,000 Lil E Tee last year at Presque Isle, posting a lifetime-high Beyer of 99. There is plenty of early speed in the Presidentialaffair, and it should set up perfectly for the Andrew Carter-trained Whistle Pig. Others in the field include Diplomatic Charm, Sonvida Red, Stormy Prince, Makin Peace, Secretintelligence, Thaddeus, Don'ttrythisathome, and Nightstand.
