Spanish Decree pulls upset in Victoriana Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Spanish Decree ($23.10) wore down favored Top Ten List in the stretch to take Sunday's $125,800 Victoriana Stakes at Woodbine.

Top Ten List, the lone 3-year-old filly in the mile and a sixteenth grass test, set moderate fractions over a course labeled yielding. Spanish Decree joined her on the lead early in the stretch, and she began to edge away at the sixteenth pole en route to a half-length tally over a closing Bay Sweetie Babe. Top Ten List held on for third in the seven-horse field of Ontario-sired distaffers.

Spanish Decree covered the distance in 1:48.03 seconds under Gerry Olguin. She earned $75,000 for owner/trainer Frank Huarte, which boosted her bankroll to $841,103.
