Spanish Decree captures Lady Angela

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Spanish Decree came up the rail under a crafty ride from Jack Barton to capture Sunday's $134,375 Lady Angela Stakes at Woodbine.

It was the first stakes victory for Spanish Decree, who stalked front-running Whistling Maid through splits of :22.70 and :46.06 in the seven-furlong dash. She hit the front at the quarter pole, and gradually drew off for a 4 3/4-length score over a closing Oh Livia D.

Matter of Law was third in the nine-horse field of Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies, while favored Whistling Maid faded to fourth. The final time was 1:25.57.

Spanish Decree ($13.20) banked $80,625 in her second win this year for owner-trainer-breeder Frank Huarte.

"The way she won last time, I was very confident in her," said Barton, who rode Spanish Decree when she won her maiden at 41-1 on March 29.
