Spa Babies for Wednesday, August 2

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! Saratoga is famous for its top-notch racing for two-year-olds so I'll break down the numbers for every juvenile maiden race at the meet in the hope of finding a winner, and perhaps, a future star.

Week 1 at Saratoga was a bit of a mixed bag for "Spa Babies." Here are the numbers:

Starts - Wins - Top pick in money -(Profit/Loss based on $2 wager)
12-1-8 (+$40.90)

Thanks to Distinct Pleasure's victory at 14-1 on Thursday, and Somethingaboutyou's runner-up finish the day before at 40-1, the selections ended up in the black. Let's do better this week!

Analysis:

THUNDERESTIMATE must first draw in from the also-eligible list, but he shows a strong five furlong workout for this, and there is some class deep in the female family. Don't be surprised if he shows early speed from his outside perch. FORTISSI MORE goes two sprints to a route for underated barn, and receives a major rider switch to Cornelio Velasquez. He is bred both sides for grass, and shows a solid turf move a week ago. He may offer plenty of value. GRADUATING CLASS retains the services of Edgar Prado after finishing ahead of three of today's opponents on the main track. He draws a good inside post. ADMIRAL BIRD goes out for top turf barn, and the son of Breeders' Cup Mile winner Royal Academy worked swiftly on grass at the Keeneland April sale. He wouldn't be a surprise at all. TOBRUK has valuable experience on grass, and should show a hint of early foot. SWEEP BRIGHT goes out for a barn that has sent out live runners at the meet while TSUNAMIC is from the always live Pletcher-Velazquez combination.

The Bet: Win and Place on Thunderestimate (4-1 odds or more). If he scratches, then Win and Place on Fortissi More (10-1 odds or more).

Analysis:

QUASICOBRA must deal with the intimidating inside post position, but he hails from a top first-out barn, and the July 12 workout is fascinating indeed. His dam was a debut winner, and he cost $300,000 at auction last year. WOLLASTON BAY showed good speed at long odds in career debut when facing a live Pletcher-trained debut winner. He should show good zip again, but draws outside some very promising babies. SAMMARCO is by a promising young sire, and attracts Edgar Prado. WESTWON has lots of class in his pedigree, and the works aren't too shabby, either. SIXTHIRTEEN has really turned it up in his last couple of works while REAFFIRM is another in the Pletcher/Velazquez war fleet.

The bet: Win and Place on Quasicobra (7-2 odds or more).
