Spa Babies for Wednesday, August 16

Welcome to Spa Babies! Saratoga is famous for its top-notch racing for two-year-olds so I'll break down the numbers for every juvenile maiden race at the meet in the hope of finding a winner, and perhaps, a future star.

Week 1 results:
Starts - Wins - Top pick in money -(Profit/Loss based on $2 wager)
12-1-8 (+$40.90)

Week 2 results:
7-1-2 (+$1.70)
Laurentide Ice was the Spa Baby winner ($14.00, $7.70) of the meet's second week.

Week 3 results:
12-3-9 (-$19.60)
C P West ($8.10), Dandy Mandy ($5.30, bailed out by entrymate Tremendous One), and Hold That Thought ($6.70) were the Spa Baby winners. Lots of second-place finishes coupled with poor betting affected the bottom line.

Meet results:
31-5-19 (+$23)

Extended statistics will return for Thursday's card.

Race 2
5 Furlongs
Maiden Special Weight (New York Breds)
2-year-old fillies
Purse $47,000

QUICK HUMOR is by a 19% juvenile debut sire out of a sprint-winning mare that has already dropped a two-year-old winner. Trainer Barclay Tagg is 3-10 with a $6.05 ROI over the last five years with statebred juveniles debuting in dirt sprints with Lasix. One of those winners was Funny Cide, a son of Distorted Humor. Quick Humor's works aren't much to look at, but she seemingly finds a soft spot for her debut. BLACK VELVET BAND's sire has a juvenile debut winner at this meet, and her trainer is extremely underrated. She only sold for $3,000 as a weanling, and for $6,500 as a yearling, but Velazquez sees fit to ride. TRE' BON PRO has shown potential in both lifetime starts, and receives huge rider switch to Prado. Should be contesting the pace along with SIMPLY PREFERRED. NAVY MISS raced greenly in debut, but should benefit from the experience over the racetrack.

The Bet: Quick Humor - Black Velvet Band exacta,
Quick Humor - Tre'Bon Pro exacta.

Race 4
5 Furlongs
Maiden Special Weight
Purse $47,000.

GREAT DISCOVERY is a half to a juvenile debut winner, and the Dallas Stewart barn is capable with first-time starters. It's good to see the recent five furlong workout on the tab, and the Maria's Mon - Storm Cat 'nick' produced graded winner Cause to Believe. FIRST DEGREE showed high speed in both lifetime starts, and projects as a strong pace threat once more today. Half to Schuylerville winner Classic Elegance exits a quick affair that was won in devastating fashion by City Snitch, and should be prominent when they turn for home. COWTOWN CAT cost seven figures after breezing a furlong in 10.20. His frequent workmate, Point Blake, flopped for Pletcher this weekend, however, and Cowtown Cat may be overbet based on his connections. MINT SLEWLEP sold for 33 times the stud fee of his sire after breezing two furlongs in 22.60 in April. He's stuck on the rail, and will need a strong break. ICE MAN COMETH boasts a classic Florida speed pedigree, and goes out for excellent debut barn. BOOGIE BOGGS is a son of juvenile stakes-winner Smokey Mirage, and the Zito barn has been hot with firsters.

The Bet:
Great Discovery to Win (7-2 odds or more)

Race 8
6 Furlongs
Adirondack Breeders' Cup Stakes (Grade 2)
2-year-old fillies
Purse $200,000

MAGICAL RIDE earned huge triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure when beating a pair of next-out winners, and could be the speed of the speed despite breaking from the far outside post. TORA makes first start for Dutrow after beating next-out winner by huge margin at Churchill Downs. Shows bullet workout for this, and entices Prado to ride. EARLY VINTAGE showed good stalking ability in career debut, and 500K juvenile purchase should get hot pace to attack. Barn is overdue for a win. POST INVADER is another that gets a plus pace scenario. Boasts perfect record at Calder, but gets class quiz at the Spa. CHAGALL just missed after breaking from outside post in the Debutante at Churchill. It's Pletcher and Johnny V., but this one may be committed to front-running tactics from the inside post. RICHWOMAN has already won on two coasts, and three different tracks. Dead game winning Debutante over Chagall.

The Bet:
Magical Ride - Tora exacta
Magical Ride - Early Vintage exacta
