Spa Babies for Wednesday

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! Saratoga is famous for its top-notch racing for two-year-olds so I'll break down the numbers for every juvenile maiden race at the meet in the hope of finding a winner, and perhaps, a future star.

Week 1 results:
Starts - Wins - Top pick in money -(Profit/Loss based on $2 wager)
12-1-8 (+$40.90)

Week 2 results:
7-1-2 (+$1.70)
Laurentide Ice was the Spa Baby winner ($14.00, $7.70) of the meet's second week.

Week 3 results:
12-3-9 (-$19.60)
C P West ($8.10), Dandy Mandy ($5.30, bailed out by entrymate Tremendous One), and Hold That Thought ($6.70) were the Spa Baby winners. Lots of second-place finishes coupled with poor betting affected the bottom line.

Week 4 results:
13-0-3 (-$36)
Without a doubt, this past week was the worst in the three-year history of Spa Babies. The selections were atrocious, and the betting was worse. Time for a comeback. I haven't cashed an exotics bet all meet so will change my strategy. If a selection goes off between 2-1 and 7-2 odds, he will be bet to Win. If the selection goes off at 4-1 or longer, he will be bet to Win and Place. Anything under 2-1 will not be played. Time to turn things around.

Meet results:
44-5-22 (-$13)

Analysis:

CHIEF'S LAKE showed good early speed from intimidating inside post in debut, but was outsprinted and shuffled back entering the turn. The addition of blinkers may allow him to focus better on the task at hand, and he is bred for speed on both sides of the pedigree. Expect him to be forwardly-placed as he drops in for a tag. MARTY THE CLOCKER is by solid debut sire, and the $25,000 juvenile buy seems well-spotted at this level. ZIP TO THE CITY took some money for his debut, but never got involved after chasing quick splits. Expect Johnny V. to have him close to the pace if he breaks alertly from the rail. NAVY MISS raced greenly in debut behind runaway winner. Can improve once she figures the game out, but must face males.

The Bet: Chief's Lake to Win if 2-1 or more, or to Win and Place if 4-1 or more.

Analysis:

Graham Motion has sent out a pair of juvenile debut winners at 5 1/2 furlongs at this meet including turf graduate Gilded Arrow (4-1 odds, ridden by Velazquez). His LIKE ROYALTY must break alertly from inside post, but there's lots of quality in this female family. FINAL REFRAIN shows solid drills for barn that has sent out some live runners at the meet. ELITE STATUS flopped on dirt, but underrated barn can send out turf winners at a price, and the promising young sire displayed tons of precocity and grass ability. DOCTOR M J is bred both sides for sod, and shows some solid breezes over the grass. INFIELD LAKE and QUALITY AFFAIR both took money before showing speed on dirt. Either/or may be prominent from the get-go.

The Bet: Like Royalty to Win if 2-1 or more, or to Win and Place if 4-1 or more.
