Spa Babies for Sunday

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! Saratoga is famous for its top-notch racing for two-year-olds so I'll break down the numbers for every juvenile maiden race at the meet in the hope of finding a winner, and perhaps, a future star.

Full statistical analysis and meet recap will return for Wednesday's card.

Sunday, August 20, 2006

Race 2
6 Furlongs
Maiden Special Weight (New York Breds)
2-year-old fillies
Purse $47,000

Analysis:

SECOND MARRIAGE sold for $100,000 as a yearling before being bought back for $115,000 earlier this year. Her dam is related to five juvenile winners including multiple stakes-winner Shopping For Love, and Second Marriage did not have an easy trip chasing a favored winner in her career debut. She draws a more favorable post position today, and should be close to the pace while racing in the clear. Like the top pick, CROSSTOWN TRAFFIC broke poorly from the rail in her debut. She made up some late ground that day, and now adds Lasix for excellent. She shows a solid workout leading up to this event, and mustn't be taken lightly despite the fact that she has strong turf breeding on the bottom of her pedigree. LYRICAL BEAT is the first foal of an unraced mare that cost $20,000 as a yearling. Tiger Ridge is a solid young sire, and the works aren't as slow as they seem on paper. She must break alertly from the demanding inside post position, however. TISHMEISTER is the first foal of a dam that won as a juvenile, and City Zip gets a good amount of early winners. The July 9 workout matches up with one of the barn's older runners (Hasty, 65 Beyer). Early tote action may tell the entire story here. HUMOROUS VENTURE is by a top first-out sire, and her dam was a juvenile sprint winner. Her workouts aren't very impressive so she may need a start. BOXITUP adds blinkers and John Velazquez. L D'S GALAXY worked swiftly (presumably in company with Boxitup) out of the gate on August 13. MIXED DOUBLES adds Coa, and should show speed from the inside.

The Bet: Second Marriage - Crosstown Traffic exacta

Race 7
6 Furlongs
Maiden Special Weight (New York Breds)
2-year-old fillies
Purse $47,000

Analysis:

ACADIANA has a strong turf pedigree, but showed excellent early speed in debut after breaking poorly from the inside post. Speed didn't play very well at Saratoga on July 30, but she won a pace battle despite failing to change leads in the stretch. She should be prominent from the get-go on Sunday, and will do better with the experience under her belt. TALE OF THE QUEEN made up lots of late ground despite racing greenly in debut. The dam is a half to Grade 1 winner Catinca, and the switch to John Velazquez is a major positive. BARONESS THATCHER is kin to a juvenile stakes-winner, and she took all the money for her career debut at Churchill. She ran well that day, but trainer Dale Romans is having a tough, tough meet. DEBBIE GOT EVEN goes out for barn that has sent out red-hot juveniles at the meet, but must deal with troublesome inside post. Dam was a $450,000 yearling that won at two. MISS TIZZY adds Lasix after showing good speed in her debut. Must avoid another pace battle here, and loses Johnny Velazquez to Tale of the Queen. ALLUDE is out of a half to the great Holy Bull, and her sire was fleet of foot.

The Bet: Acadiana - Tale of the Queen exacta

Acadiana - Baroness Thatcher exacta.
