Spa Babies for Saturday

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! Saratoga is famous for its top-notch racing for two-year-olds so I'll break down the numbers for every juvenile maiden race at the meet in the hope of finding a winner, and perhaps, a future star.

Friday's results: 4-0-2, -$10.00

Meet results: 63-7-33, -$24.50

Race 2
6 1/2 Furlongs
Maiden Special Weight
2-year-olds
Purse $47,000

Analysis:

GASCONADE is by promising young sire War Chant out of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Brave Raj, and his five furlong gate workout on August 21 matched up with Lilly Carson, a Ralph Nicks-trained juvenile firster that won here on Friday. A half to a pair of stakes-winners, Gasconade attracts top rider Edgar Prado, and may offer a hint of value. KONG'S REVENGE is the first starter from a dam that was stakes-placed sprinting as a juvenile. Have to respect this pedigree at a price, but the barn has been ice-cold at the meet. GIVEITYOURBESTSHOT showed improved speed in second lifetime start, but was still green, and that cost him when it counted most. The addition of blinkers should keep him focused better on the task at hand, and he looms a strong pace factor ZANJERO was shuffled back a bit while in between horses in the early stages of his debut, then rallied mildly on the far outside in the stretch for Scott Blasi. Shows a bullet work for this, and the $700,000 yearling should improve second-out. RIGHTEOUS was outsprinted in debut, but rallied belatedly once swung to the preferred outside paths. Son of multiple stakes-winner Hitch should appreciate today's added distance. TIMBER RESERVE cost $400,000 at auction earlier this year, and the dam was multiple stakes-placed. He must deal with the far outside post, however.

The Bet: Gasconade to Win and Place at 9-2 odds or more

Race 4
5 1/2 Furlongs (Turf)
Maiden Special Weight (New York Breds)
2-year-old fillies
Purse $47,000

Analysis:

DON'T MIND ME is by excellent New York-bred turf sire out of dam that won sprinting as a juvenile. Don't think she has to be a monster to beat this crew. BELLE HARBOR gets major rider switch to Prado after runner-up effort in turf debut. Has good tactical speed, and looms the horse to beat. FIONA FREUD took all the money last time, and made wide midrace move before understandably packing it in during the stretch run. Barn does well with turf runners, and she their charge should continue to improve. SERIOUS SONG showed high speed in turf debut, and figures to be on the engine again. CAGEY GIRL had troubled trip in debut, and underrated barn is overdue for a win. CLAY'S RUN is kin to a pair of first-turf winners, and attracts Velazquez while SIMPLY SPEED is the first foal from a multiple stakes-winning mare.

The Bet: Don't Mind Me to Win and Place at 6-1 odds or more

Race 6
6 1/2 Furlongs
Maiden Special Weight
2-year-olds
Purse $47,000

Analysis:

TIZ WONDERFUL sold for $475,000 earlier this year, and shows some intriguing workouts in preparation for his debut. The August 29 work matches up with Blasi's Grade 3 winner Datrick while the August 22 work matches Blasi's stakes-placed juvenile filly Appealing Zophie. This is the first foal of a multiple sprint-winning mare that excelled over off-tracks, and looks live on Saturday. SHIPMATE continues to show Beyer improvement, and his best race came over this surface. Must deal with a difficult inside draw. TALE OF TREASURE showed speed in debut, and may end up with a nice pace-tracking trip while in the clear. BUJAGALI (Pletcher/Velazquez), SOUTHERNCONFERENCE (daughter of Grade 3 sprint winner In Confeence, trained by red-hot Zito), and TATER TUTT (sold for 13 times the stud fee of his sire) are all interesting firsters in what is shaping up to be a promising event.

The Bet: Tiz Wonderful to Win at 7-2 or more.
