Spa Babies for Monday, August 14

Welcome to Spa Babies! Saratoga is famous for its top-notch racing for two-year-olds so I'll break down the numbers for every juvenile maiden race at the meet in the hope of finding a winner, and perhaps, a future star.

Monday, August 14, 2006
Race 2
1 1/16 Miles (Turf)
Maiden Special Weight
2-year-old fillies
Purse $48,000

DANDY MANDY may look like the 'other' half of the Pletcher entry with Velazquez named to ride TREMENDOUS ONE, but the former shows some solid workouts at Monmouth in preparation for her debut. The August 10 work matches Pletcher's veteran turf sprinter Mighty Beau while several other drills match up with a juvenile stakes-winning barnmate. She hails from the female family of noted runner and sire Tale of the Cat, and sire More Than Ready has done very well with his turf progeny. Still waiting for Bill Mott to pop with a baby, but PITAMAKAN certainly has the pedigree to get the job done first-out. Pitamakan is by the great Danzig out of a mare that won on turf overseas, and draws a cozy inside post. FERNALD is stuck on the also-eligible list, but underrated barn can certainly pop with a young horse, and the dam was a Grade 3 winner on turf. A half-sister to mujltiple graded turf winner Aud, Fernald may offer value if she breaks into the body of the race. GRANNY FRANNY has turf pedigree, and the works aren't bad for value barn. She draws way outside, however. VOWEL has lots of turf blood, and Mott's main man Cornelio takes the mount.

The Bet: Dandy Mandy - Pitamakan exacta (turf only)

Race 4
5 1/2 Furlongs (Turf)
Maiden Special Weight (New York Breds)
2-year-old fillies
Purse $47,000

HOLD THAT THOUGHT is very closely inbred to Storm Bird (3x2), but the early foal shows a solid string of workouts culminating with a three furlong blowout over the turf three days ago. Sire is excellent with turf performers, and her third dam was the classy Mom's Command. Contessa has sent out some live runners this meet, and he scored with 29-1 juvenile debuter Cozie Advantage over the Spa lawn back in 2001. SWEET VALENTINE debuts for dangerous ship-in barn, but has no published workouts in three weeks. Sire does very well with turf runners, and the dam's only lifetime win came on the grass. FREUDIAN SMILE is another of those running Freuds, and she has some speed on the bottom of her pedigree. Unlikely to break in from the also-eligible list. Don't discount SERIOUS SONG. She did nothing in her dirt debut, but the August 8 bullet workout on the grass matches Martin's three-year-old Judd (finished fifth in turf maiden special on August 12 with a 77 Beyer). Expect a better performance. CAGEY GIRL debuts for underrated connections that can score with a firsters. FIONA FREUD and JACLYN JOY both raced evenly on turf, and have the experience edge.

The Bet: Win and Place on Hold That Thought (4-1 odds or more).
