Spa Babies for 9/7

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet.  Hopefully, we'll end up with a tidy profit.

Sunday's results
Race 2:  Omi's Vindication finished tenth
Race 6:  Saver Dude finished sixth
Race 10: Hot Dixie Chick finished first

Meet Recap:
Things looked good going into the final week of the meet as we showed a positive ROI after the first 36 days.  Unfortunately, a diastrous slump has put us well behind going into the final card.  Here's hoping we can bail out.

Analysis:
Bill Mott isn't known for his first-out prowess, but he has sent out three debut winners on grass in 2009, and PEARLY BLUE looks to have a nice turf pedigree.  The dam won the Grade 3 Martha Washington on turf at Pimlico with a 91 Beyer Speed Figure, and was a first-turf winner at Fair Grounds.  With Empire Maker on the top, there should be plenty of stamina, and the most recent workout looks solid.
HATHEER is strictly the filly to beat off her good debut try when bet down to 13-10.  The winner of that race, Smart Seattle, returned to finish second in the P.G. Johnson Stakes at the Spa.  Hatheer has good speed, draws a cozy inside post, and looks very dangerous at short odds.
THE WEST RIM ships over from Ireland, and gets the blinkers and Lasix makeover from top turf trainer Christophe Clement.  She ran into a first-out winner from the Aidan O'Brien barn in Kingdom of Munster, and that one returned to finish fourth of five in a Group 3.  She drops in with fillies after competing against males overseas, and may attempt rating tactics under Rajiv Maragh.
COQUINA DAY makes the two sprints to a route move for her third lifetime start, and should appreciate the added distance as a daughter of Thunder Gulch out of an A.P. Indy mare.  Expect some improvement as she faced some impressive fillies on the main track.
KITTYLICIOUS is mired on the also-eligible list, but she made a premature midrace move against maiden claimers 12 days ago.  She may be able to crack the gimmicks at a price. FUGITIVE ANGEL goes out for excellent connections, but the workouts only give mixed feelings.  METTLED disappointed greatly in her career debut on dirt, but it's probably too early to give up on her, and she may show improved zip stretching out in distance. DAD'S CRAZY showed speed in her first route attempt, but faltered badly when the real running began.  She may have to rate with a couple of speeds entered to her inside.  IT'SMYBURTDAY didn't do much in career debut.  CAMINADORA ran into a well-meant runner in Kid Kate on the main track, and that filly returned to take the Jr. Champion Stakes in another off-the-turf affair at Monmouth.  Think this one will move up on grass.  LA CLOCHE exits a key race on the main track, but she's really bred for the weeds.  Her dam, Memories of Silver, earned a dozen triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures on turf including a 110 when winning the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II at Keeneland.  The three week gap in the work tab gives cause for pause.

NOTABLE WORKOUT INFORMATION:  Worked 2 furlongs in 21.1 prior to the February auction

Analysis:
The addition of blinkers should sharpen GOOD TO BE SEEN's already potent early speed, and the cutback to five furlongs should also work to his favor.  The Montbrook colt gave a good effort when just failing to last on August 12, and looms the one to catch and beat at a probable short price.
POW WOW is a half-sister to Spectacular Moon, a winner of her first four starts at two including the Grade 2 Astarita over sloppy going with an 81 Beyer.  Pow Wow is by a win-early sire, and his trainer has been sending out live juveniles at the meet.
SABATINO may want a bit more ground, but he's been working nicely at Saratoga, and should offer value for low-profile connections.  His dam has already foaled eight prior winners.
PUNTA NIZUC showed speed against maiden claimers two back before racing wide in a tough maiden special weight on August 26.  He's pretty quick from the gate, but may not have the speed of Good to Be Seen.
MAKE IT SPECIAL goes out for barn that has been struggling win-wise with debut runners in 2009, but Nick Zito has sent out a couple of babies to runner-up efforts at this meet. Make It Special may want more distance as the bottom half of his pedigree features strong routers and turf runners.  SPARKLE OF LIGHT exits a key race at Churchill Downs, but the worktab is spotty for her first start since late April, and she is stuck down on the rail again as she tackles males.  HENRY'S TIME adds blinkers after attempting to rally over a speed-favoring track in his first start on dirt.  ECONOMIC SWOON goes out for barn that excels with juvenile debut runners, but the workouts fail to excite.  PLEASANT PRINCE finished behind Punta Nizuc on August 7, but this barn does just as well with second-out runners as they do with firsters.

Analysis:
TRIPPO didn't break very alertly in his turf debut, but Julien Leparoux was able to save ground for most of the way while in midpack despite the tardy break.  Trippo raced in behind horses turning for home, finished evenly when switched to the outside in midstretch, and seems to be rounding into form for Frank Alexander.  Leparoux may work out a ground-saving, pace-tracking trip from the rail post.
CHAIRMAN NOW finished ahead of Trippo on August 16, and he didn't break very well coming out of the gate.  The son of Tiznow seems to appreciate these route races, and Alan Garcia figures to have his mount just off the early fractions.
BILLIONS BOY didn't do much wrong when a runner-up in both sprint outings, and should be legged up perfectly for his initial route try.  The $250,000 yearling is out of a half-sister to the nice turf filly Wonder Again, the 2004 Diana winner with a 110 Beyer.  Expect Billions Boy to be up and on the pace under Rajiv Maragh.
TEE EM ARR is by the good turf runner Powerscourt, and he worked a quick half-mile prior to selling for $60,000 earlier this year.  You'll get a price with these low-profile connections.
GRAND PIANO MAN fell far behind in the early portion of his career debut, but finished with some interest, and is expected to improve with that race under his girth.  POWER BLAST is a New York-bred facing open company as Linda Rice goes for the meet training title.  The workouts look solid, but this is a tough outside post, and Jump Start hasn't been the best grass stallion in the world.  There is turf on the bottom of the pedigree. PSYCHIC INCOME makes career debut for barn that does very well with firsters going long on the weeds.  The works look solid, but Toccet is 0-29 with first-turf runners.  MINT MAKER didn't do much in debut on the grass, and seems bred more for main track speed than turf prowess.  CRYSTAL MOMENT, a $1,200,000 yearling, didn't do much sprinting in his debut for Bill Mott, but is expected to make a forward move in this route event.  RIGHT TO BURN burned money in his debut over the Tapeta surface at Presque Isle Downs, and seems in steep here.  ESKENDEREYA boasts a strong pedigree and top connections, but you have to demand value on a first-time starter in these tough route heats.  UNIQUE TUNE goes out for barn that usually gives them a race or two before they strut their best stuff.  TIGER WILLIE must move forward.  NORTHERN GIANT should do better as the son of Giant's Causeway out of a half to Take Charge Lady figures to appreciate the added distance.

Selections:
1.  Trippo  2.  Chairman Now  3.  Billions Boy

The Play:
Trippo to Win at 2-1 odds or greater

Race 10
7 Furlongs
Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes (Grade 1)
2-year-olds
$300,000

Analysis:
DUBLIN looks set for a rematch with divisional leader BACKTALK in the Hopeful.  Although no match for Backtalk at Churchill Downs on June 11, Dublin returned to impressively defeat a field of maidens on August 1, and should get plenty of pace to attack in this spot.
PRINCE ROONEY destroyed six others in the Mountaineer Juvenile on August 1, and the undefeated son of Tale of the Cat will get the acid test in this Grade 1 heat.  He draws a comfortable outside post, and projects for a good stalking trip while in the second flight.
GRAND SLAM ANDRE's confidence should be sky-high after taking stakes races in Texas and Oklahoma in his last two races.  These will be tougher, but the Asmussen-trained son of Grand Slam owns good tactical speed, and figures to be close by when they turn for home.
ASPIRE was very green in his debut, but still was able to run down Good to Be Seen, the expected favorite in today's fifth race.  He shows a pair of bullet works since that run, and should be charging hard in the stretch.
WESTOVER WILDCAT looked good beaten a couple of next-out winners on Opening Day, and may be the speed of the speed breaking from the inside post.  BACKTALK, a perfect 3-3 in his career, has been professional and game in all of his races, and his late kick must be respected.  As always, he looms a danger.  NOT MACHO ANY MORE won debut at Belmont in good fashion, but hasn't started at the meet, and there is a 17-day gap between the last two workouts.  ENUMERATE didn't have the easiest of trips when necked by Backtalk in the Sanford, and he wouldn't be a shock as part of the Asmussen three-headed monster.  ONE NOTE SAMBA whipped New York-breds on August 16, but the pace figures to be swifter in this spot.  LISTON scored a TKO in his career debut for Kiaran McLaughlin, but may have to rate in this round.  FLATTER THAN ME didn't run well in the Saratoga Special, and needs to do more here.  OVERLAP and AIKENITE both need Beyer boosts.

Selections:
1. Dublin  2.  Prince Rooney  3.  Grand Slam Andre

The Play:
Dublin to Win and Place at 9-2 odds or greater
