Spa Babies for 9/2

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet.
Hopefully, we'll end up with a tidy profit.

Monday's results
Race 5 - Quick Money finished eighth
Race 7 - Hudson Landing finished third

Week 1 Recap:  12-2-5 (- $6.50)
Both good and bad wagering luck were thrown into the opening week mix.  Kid Kate was a SpaBaby top selection, but the bet on her nose became moot when her race was rained off the grass.  She won anyway at 9-2 odds.  Fortune smiled on us on Monday afternoon as top selection Eire's Kid ran poorly, but we were bailed out in the wagering portion by 5-1 entrymate Ibboyee.  The quest for our fourth straight profitable Spa Baby summer sits at -$6.50.

Week 2 Recap:  9-2-5 (+ $18.40)
Turned a 7-10 shot into a $36.40 exacta on Friday when Punta Nizac completed the number at 22-1 odds. That's been the defining race of our meet thus far, but it's gotten us into the black.

Week 3 Recap:  11-2-6 (+ $4.60)
After a frustrating early portion of the week, we rallied somewhat on Sunday with a winner that was under our odds limit, a $22.00 exacta, and a $16.60 place price.  Three weeks down, three to go, and only $16.50 in the black.

Week 4 Recap - 18-5-12 (- $12.40)
Some decent handicapping this week, but the gambling aspect was often poor.  An early-week slump turned into a mid-week rally, but wet weather ruined some turf selections, and no momentum was gained.  Two weeks to go, and still a very small profit for the meet.

Week 5 Recap - 11-3-4 (+ $6.70)
Zodiac Girl ($16.00) got the week off to a good start, and we held mostly steady thereafter with questionable weather in the forecasts.  With one week remaining, we show a slight profit as we gun for four straight Spa Baby summers in the black.

Meet record based on starts, wins, top pick (after scratches) in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play ($2 wager): 61-14-32 (+ $10.80)

Analysis:
FAYOUM made a nice impression in his career debut.  He broke beautifully from the widest post, pressed 4-5 favorite King Kitten into submission from the outside, and stayed on well in the stretch despite being placed in a tight spot in between rivals.  Steve Asmussen's stats with second-time starters are out of this world, and Fayoum should be a strong pace factor once again.
CHIEF COUNSEL took all the money for his career debut, and certainly wasn't disgraced when second to an impressive Darley firster named Liston.  Bill Mott does much better with second-time runners than with firsters, and Chief Counsel could make life tough for Fayoum in the first quarter-mile.
BONAVENTO is bred for speed on both sides of the pedigree, and he has been working swiftly for top connections.  Would any Pletcher-trained baby really be a major surprise?
BAATESH's trainer, Kiaran McLaughlin, has had a bit of a down meet with his juvenile performers, but this $400,000 yearling is a half-brother to Resplendency, a multiple stakes-winner with a 105 Beyer Speed Figure on her record.
REIN KING showed speed in his career debut, but tired through a solid last eighth of a mile.  He'll need to hustle to obtain a good spot from his inside post position, and I'm not sure if he's as quick as either Fayoum and Chief Counsel.   SWASHBUCKLER adds Lasix for second lifetime start, and that's a huge angle in maiden races.  He didn't break well in his debut, and Wayne Lukas is having an excellent meet.  Expect some improvement.  BROTHER STUART goes out for barn that has had surprising success with young horses this summer, but the workouts at Churchill Downs fail to excite.
ROYAL STOCKS boasts classic Florida speed breeding.  His full brother, Razor, put up a 103 Beyer Speed Figure when winning the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs at six furlongs.  Trainer Stanley Hough is overdue for a debut winner this year.
ROULETTE WINNER has a fascinating pedigree with stamina on top, and tons of speed on the bottom.  His half-brother, Yes It's True, earned a whopping 118 Beyer Speed Figure in winning the Grade 3 Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap at Pimlico.  Trainer Phil Serpe has a debut winner this meet, but he usually does better with second-time startesr

Analysis:
KAILA ANN'S KITTEN's trainer, Chad Brown, is a future star, and he has already sent out a pair of juvenile debut winners at the meet including Zodiac Girl, a winner going two turns on the lawn.  By the turf- and distance-loving sire Kitten's Joy, Kaila Ann's Kitten is well-suited to the conditions of this race.
ORCHESTRATOR also draws a cozy inside post, and has the valuable experience edge on the top pick.  She just missed over Arlington's polytrack surface last time out, and we've seen good synthetic form succesfully translate to the turf.  Trainer Ken McPeek has gotten hot, and Orchestrator should work out a decent trip from close to the pace.
C. C. COCO didn't do much in her debut on dirt, but the nicely-bred filly should appreciate stretching out in distance for barn that does very well with second-time runners.  She isn't the worst longshot stab in the world.
ISN'T SHE GRAND bombed in her turf debut, but she has some speed on the bottom of her pedigree, and may do better turning back, and switching to dirt, if this race is rained off the sod.
THATSALLSHEWROTE ran a good second here a couple of days ago, and looms an unlikely starter.  Stablemate VEIL OF TEARS is a well-bred firster from Todd Pletcher's barn, and she shows three straight five-furlong works leading up to her debut.  She can't be completely discounted.  ZILVA ran evenly in an off-the-turf race, and it will be interesting to see how the daughter of sprinter-miler Successful Appeal handles this two turns distance.  She should be properly legged up after a pair of sprints.  THE UNDERLING ran well in debut to finish second to stakes class Beautician, then failed badly as the chalk here opening week.  She gives out mixed feelings trying turf for the first time.  CELESTIAL SWEEP must improve off dull dirt run when finishing just behind The Underling.  SENADA's dam, Owsley, earned 100 Beyers when winning the Grade 2 Galaxy going 1 3/16 miles on Keeneland's grass course, and the Grade 3 Modesty at the same distance over Arlington's green.  The $800,000 yearling wouldn't be too much of a surprise.  LIMEHEART has some turf in the pedigree, and she ran well after a slow start in her debut on the main track.

Selections:
1.  Kaila Ann's Kitten  2.  Orchestrator  3.  C. C. Coco

The Play:
