Analysis:
SPIRIT OF ROSE received quite an education in her career debut.  The daughter of City Zip was bumped hard at the start, raced in behind horses going into the turn, and had to swing widest in upper stretch.  She still finished with some interest, and galloped out nicely going into the clubhouse turn.  She should move forward with that experience under her belt, and trainer Linda Rice has been unstoppable at the meet.
BACKCOUNTRY BOY boasts a quality pedigree as a daughter of Kentucky Derby and Preakness hero Smarty Jones and Beautiful America, a multiple stakes-winning runner for these connections.  Beautiful America won first-out at the Spa by almost five lengths with a 74 Beyer, and she would post a 95 Beyer top when finishing second in the Union Avenue Stakes here in 2004.  Trainer Ramon Hernandez is only 1 for his last 30 with debut runners, however.
FREUD'S NOTEBOOK finished ahead of Spirit of Rose after breaking from the far outside post on August 12, and she hasn't done much wrong in her short career.  She has a solid late move, and shouldn't be discounted.  Fans of trainer-jockey statistics should note that Del Carroll and Mike Luzzi are only 1 for their last 36 at the Spa.
JUNALUSKA had the misfortune to tackle runaway winner One Note Samba last time out, and is prepared for her third start of the meet.  She has an underrated break from the gate, and may be a bit closer to the fractions this afternoon.
TURNPIKE TOKEN was ignored in the wagering prior to her career debut, and she didn't do much attempting to rally against the grain of a speed-favoring track.  Trainer Seth Benzel has good statistics with second-time starters.  MAGIC TIGER looks like a quick one.  She worked a furlong in under 10 seconds prior to selling for $55,000 earlier this year, and she set moderate fractions in her career debut.  Her trainer boasts amazing statistics with second-time starters, and Magic Tiger looks like the one to catch.  SHOTGUN BANDIT finished 16 1/4 lengths behind Junaluska 27 days ago, and obviously must improve.  ABILIO provides depth to the Rice-trained entry.  THUNDER CHIEF may want a bit more ground, and is stuck on the rail.

Analysis:
WHYDAH was entered in a similar spot on July 31, but rain forced the race to the main track, and Whydah tired very badly in that heat.  If this race stays on the grass, expect the Todd Pletcher-trained daughter of More Than Ready to improve drastically.  She is kin to a grass winner, and it's nice to see the recent five-furlong workout on the main track.
GRANNY BROUGHTON sports a solid pedigree, and she shows some good workouts over the training track leading up to her career debut.  Michael Maker is only 2 for his last 45 with debut runners since January 1, 2008, however.
MARTITA SANGRITA has a strong turf pedigree, and the workouts at Fair Hill look sharp.  Michael Matz is only 1 for his last 38 with debut runners.
FAR ISLE shows a 16-day gap between the last two workouts, and it's interesting that this daughter of Indian Charlie from the family of Unbridled's Song is making her debut on the lawn.
AFLEET MAGGI ran well over Arlington's polytrack two back, and we've seen good synthetic form successfully transfer over to turf.  She seemed a little green on the main track on August 10, but Ken McPeek has sent out some live runners over the last couple of weeks.  This one has seasoning, and wouldn't be a surprise.  THATSALLSHEWROTE passed tired ones at Monmouth, and looms a threat should this race be washed to the main track.  KEY QUALITY has burned a lot of money in her short career, but Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott adds blinkers to the arsenal this afternoon.  Expect good early speed from this corner.  FLYINGLOUY looks like the weaker half of the Pletcher entry scheduled to race on grass.  HIGH STYLE has a powerful pedigree, but may want a bit more ground.  RED BARCHETTA also has tons of class in her bloodlines, but there is a 22-day gap between the last two drills.

Selections:
1.  Whydah  2.  Granny Broughton  3.  Martita Sangrita

Analysis:
GITCHEE GOOMIE looks like another live runner from the red-hot Linda Rice barn.  She is bred both sides for turf, and worked a sub-1:00 five furlongs on the turf on August 17.
KHANCORD KID, Richard Migliore's first call, shows some solid works for barn that is way overdue for a nice score.  This is an intriguing pedigree with stamina and class on top coupled with speed on the bottom.
HEALTHY DEBATE and ANGIOLETTA are both by the good grass sire Freud, and both should offer solid value.  The former doesn't show a published work in the last three weeks while Angioletta has some pedigree on the bottom for low-profile connections.
POPPY DAY didn't do much in career debut on dirt, but she goes out for barn that does much-better with second-time runners than with firsters, and the surface switch may be just what the doctor ordered.  Expect better from her here. STELLALUCE may be the one to beat for Ms. Rice if this race is rained off the weeds.  PORKCHOP SANDRA showed good speed in her debut before faltering in the final furlong.  She looms a pace factor on dirt.  SIMMY'S frequent workmate, Opus A, was a debut winner for top connections on dirt earlier in the meet.  This sire has struggled with first-turf performers, however.  FIVE STAR MARIA is bred both sides for speed, and may show zip on the main track.  NICE AND NAUGHTY adds Lasix for top turf barn.  Ramon Dominguez' second call must avoid a wide trip if able to draw in from the also-eligible list.  COVER ISSUE must show speed from the sometimes-intimidating inside post.  ROSALIE'S DANCE has lots of turf blood, but may want more distance.  INVASIVE needs to improve following a pair of one-paced dirt tries.  The board may tell the story with VALUABLE LADY.
