Spa Babies for 8/26

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet. Hopefully, we'll end up with a tidy profit.

Monday's results:
Race 3 - Sugar Trade finished third
Race 6 - Quick Money scratched; second choice Reading Group finished fourth

Week 1 Recap:  12-2-5 (- $6.50)
Both good and bad wagering luck were thrown into the opening week mix.  Kid Kate was a SpaBaby top selection, but the bet on her nose became moot when her race was rained off the grass.  She won anyway at 9-2 odds.  Fortune smiled on us on Monday afternoon as top selection Eire's Kid ran poorly, but we were bailed out in the wagering portion by 5-1 entrymate Ibboyee.  The quest for our fourth straight profitable Spa Baby summer sits at -$6.50.

Week 2 Recap:  9-2-5 (+ $18.40)
Turned a 7-10 shot into a $36.40 exacta on Friday when Punta Nizac completed the number at 22-1 odds. That's been the defining race of our meet thus far, but it's gotten us into the black.

Week 3 Recap:  11-2-6 (+ $4.60)
After a frustrating early portion of the week, we rallied somewhat on Sunday with a winner that was under our odds limit, a $22.00 exacta, and a $16.60 place price.  Three weeks down, three to go, and only $16.50 in the black.

Week 4 Recap - 18-5-12 (- $12.40)
Some decent handicapping this week, but the gambling aspect was often poor.  An early-week slump turned into a mid-week rally, but wet weather ruined some turf selections, and no momentum was gained.  Two weeks to go, and still a very small profit for the meet.

Meet record based on starts, wins, top pick (after scratches) in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play ($2 wager): 50-11-28 (+ $4.10)

TRAINER INFORMATION:

Analysis:
ZODIAC GIRL makes career debut for trainer-jockey combination that put over eventual Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly Turf winner Maram in a first-out turf maiden claiming score at the Spa in 2008.  Trainer Chad Brown is extremely dependable, and he has had Zodiac Girl in serious training since early June after she blitzed a half-mile in 46 and change at the Fasig-Tipton auction in May.
MORNINGSIDEHEIGHTS has plenty of turf on the bottom of her pedigree as the dam won the Group 1 Fillies' Mile at Ascot in 1993 with a Racing Post Rating of 111.  George Weaver and Javier Castellano sent out juvenile performer Golly Day to a debut score going long on the turf here last week.
ALWAYSINMYDREAMS has shown good early speed in both lifetime starts, but the stamina just hasn't been there, and she now stretches out three furlongs in distance.  She must avoid a pace battle with JILL'S KITTEN.
Jill's Kitten pressed solid splits in her career debut over Belmont sod, but failed to stretch her speed on the main track here on August 26.  By the turf-loving, long-winded Kitten's Joy, she should appreciate switching back to turf, and stretching out around a route of ground for her excellent trainer.
MS. THANKSGIVING failed to last despite setting slow splits in initial route try at Ellis Park, but she shows some interesting workouts for barn that is beginning to break out of an early-meet slump.  She must avoid a wide draw from the far outside post.  CRYSTAL OCEAN didn't do much in career debut for Mott, but it's probably too early to completely give up on her.  She drops a notch, and should have gained valuable experience from the first-out try.  KITTYLICIOUS was simply outsprinted through a torrid first quarter-mile in career debut on dirt.  She still needs to improve in order to upset these.  STRAIGHT A STUDENT may work out a nice ground-saving, pace-tracking trip after being legged up in a pair of sprints for Gary Contessa.  She had the misfortune to tackle Worsecasescenario in an off-the-turf race at Belmont, and that one returned to take the Adirondack here on the main track.  THATSALLSHEWROTE seems like a good fit if this race is rained off the turf.

Analysis:
THE YORK ON YORK shows some solid works for career debut, and his half-sister, Sindy With an S was a fleet young runner. Eoin Harty has historically done well at this meet with young runners.
TIZ BRIAN makes debut for top first-out connections with a slew of good workouts leading up to the debut.  This Stonestreet two-year-old wouldn't be a surprise.
SEA AIR's trainer has underperformed with his juvenile debut runners at the meet, but this colt is by a promising first-out sire with some decent works on the tab.
CONDEMENED wouldn't be a surprise as his workouts look sharp, and his connections are one of the best in getting a young runner ready to win first-out.  Don't be surprised if this one has speed, but the inside post may be a hindrance.
WILDCAT NATION was outsprinted early, had some trouble, and then was forced to rally over a speed-favoring track on Opening Day.  Expect a better showing here.
PUNTA NIZUC showed speed against maiden claimers, and should be a pace factor at the very least here.  HENCEFORTH goes out for barn that has done well with babies at the meet, but may want a bit more ground to work with.  TRUST OF HONOR is bred for speed, but the workouts fail to entice, and this barn shows a low percentage with first-out runners. ANWAR SADAT is stuck way outside after a dull debut.  STRICTLY SOCIETY adds Lasix for second start, and that's a valuable angle in maiden races.
