Spa Babies for 8/24

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet. Hopefully, we'll end up with a tidy profit.

Sunday's results:
Race 2 - J'boy finished sixth
Race 5 - Idol Image scratched; second choice D'bigcat finished first
Race 7 - Kitty in a Tizzy finished third

Monday, August 24, 2009

Race 3
6 Furlongs
Lucy Scribner Stakes
2-year-old fillies (New York Breds)
Purse $70,000

Analysis:
SUGAR TRADE broke from the tricky inside post in her career debut on opening week, and soon found herself tracking the pace while down on the rail.  It looked like she wasn't going to get there in midstretch over the sloppy going, but she put her head down, and resolutely rallied to win her maiden in the shadow of the wire.  Jimmy Jerkens has had a nice meet with a couple of repeat winners coming out of their maiden victories.
SO N SO is rightly the horse to beat coming off a big-figure debut win at Belmont, but she may have been aided just a bit by a speed-favoring surface that day, and she shows a 15-day gap in the work tab.  So N So looks like the controlling speed, but may not be a great play at short odds as she tries six furlongs for the first time.
MINERALOGIST finished almost 17 lengths behind So N So first-out, then improved drastically to win the faster division of statebred maiden specials at Belmont on July 22.  She's stuck down inside, but may work out a good pace-tracking trip.
SCREEN SAVIOUR won the slower division of those New York-bred maidens on July 22, but may work out a good stalking trip while racing in the clear.
SILVER SHOES went gate-to-wire in her second start (first on dry footing) at Belmont, but she may be in chase mode with the speedy So N So also entered.  She needs a Beyer boost although that's never out of the question with lightly-raced babies.

Selections:
1.  Sugar Trade  2.  So N So  3.  Mineralogist

The Play:
Sugar Trade to Win at 2-1 odds or greater

Analysis:
Linda Rice can do no wrong at this Saratoga meet, and her entry looks double tough in today's maiden for babies  QUICK MONEY sold for $50,000 as a weanling, and is by the extremely consistent City Zip.  With a bullet 59 and change work on the tab, Quick Money should be ready to roll at 5 1/2 furlongs.
READING GROUP switches to turf after a dull try on the main track at Belmont, but he simply may have been outsprinted through a hot first quarter that afternoon.  The splits may be more reasonable in this spot, and this colt has a bit of turf breeding.
LOYAL LEADER, the other half of the Rice-trained entry, shows some excellent workouts in preparation for his career debut, and his sire, Freud, does well with turf runners.
WANA PLAY improved second-out for Gary Contessa, a trainer that won with a juvenile runner on Sunday, and has had some live two-year-olds at this meet.
ALL ZIPPED UP adds Lasix for barn that does better with second-time starters than with firsters, and he only finished a couple of lengths behind Wana Play here on August 6.  Expect a forward move.  PORCELLO finished last in career debut three weeks ago, but the $240,000 purchase should do better in this spot.  I'M HOOKED UP has a quality pedigree with speed and precocity on top, and class on the bottom.  These works look solid, but he may need a race.  PAYING ATTENTION passed tired horses at Finger Lakes.  RED HOOK BULLDOG didn't attract much attention at a pair of auctions.  JET TO CLASSICS had some trouble en route to a last-place finish on Opening Day.  Now, he draws a tough inside post.  MOST HAPPY FELLA, EIRE'S RUN, and HOOK ME UP would likely contend if this race is switched from the turf to the main track.

Selections:
1.  Quick Money  2.  Reading Group  3.  Loyal Leader

The Play:
Quick Money (half of entry) - Reading Group Exacta
Quick Money (half of entry) - Wana Play Exacta (both bets turf only)

Meet record based on starts, wins, top pick (after scratches) in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play ($2 wager): 48-11-27 (+ $6.10)
