Spa Babies for 8/19

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet.
Hopefully, we'll end up with a tidy profit.

Monday's results:
Race 2:  Antenna finished fourth
Race 4:  Positive Pitch finished third

Week 1 Recap:  12-2-5 (- $6.50)
Both good and bad wagering luck were thrown into the opening week mix.  Kid Kate was a SpaBaby top selection, but the bet on her nose became moot when her race was rained off the grass.  She won anyway at 9-2 odds.  Fortune smiled on us on Monday afternoon as top selection Eire's Kid ran poorly, but we were bailed out in the wagering portion by 5-1 entrymate Ibboyee.  The quest for our fourth straight profitable Spa Baby summer sits at -$6.50.

Week 2 Recap:  9-2-5 (+18.40)
Turned a 7-10 shot into a $36.40 exacta on Friday when Punta Nizac completed the number at 22-1 odds. That's been the defining race of our meet thus far, but it's gotten us into the black.

Week 3 Recap:  11-2-6 (+4.60)
After a frustrating early portion of the week, we rallied somewhat on Sunday with a winner that was under our odds limit, a $22.00 exacta, and a $16.60 place price.  Three weeks down, three to go, and only $16.50 in the black.

Meet record based on starts, wins, top pick (after scratches) in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play ($2 wager): 32-6-16 (+ 16.50)

Race 4
6 Furlongs
Optional Claiming ($75,000) -  "N1X' Allowance Condition
2-year-old fillies
Purse $52,000

Analysis:
MISS DIANE is probably going to have to work very hard if she is to win this entry-level condition as Kent Desormeaux will likely have to gun for the front, fight away early pace pressure, and then fend off the closers.  She is battle-tested, however, after chasing 88 Beyer winner Vertical Vision at Prairie Meadows.  That one returned to run poorly, but Vertical Vision's recent loss came over the Woodbine polytrack, and it's possible she didn't handle that surface.  Miss Diane earned a good number first-out at Churchill Downs over a questionable field, and gets a very tepid nod in a tough, tough race.
UNION WATERS looked good in a gate-to-wire debut victory for Todd Pletcher, and it's very possible that she, and not Miss Diane, is the quickest from the stalls.  Union Waters raced on what looked to be a very good rail at Belmont so perhaps a bias aided her win.  She looks like the one to beat.
ELAINE'S PRIDE was offered for a $60,000 tag for her career debut, and rolled from well off the pace to get the job done.  She would benefit from a hot pace up front, and can pick up a piece of this at a solid mutuel.
TIDAL POOL didn't break very well in the Grade 3 Debutante at Churchill Downs, and that may have doomed her to defeat then and there.  She seems well-spotted her for Mr. Lukas.
VIVID COLORS didn't impress in her 83 Beyer debut as she was allowed to coast on the lead over a sloppy track, and she flashed her tail all the way down to the wire.  Not surprisingly, she didn't do much in the Schuylerville on Opening Day, but she broke slowly and raced wide over a speed-favoring track.  She may not be as good as the 83 Beyer earned in her debut, but she's not as bad as the 51 from the Schuylerville.  You have to demand a good price to find out what we'll get today.

Selections:
1.  Miss Diane  2.  Union Waters  3.  Elaine's Pride

The Play:
Miss Diane - Union Waters Exacta
Miss Diane - Elaine's Pride Exacta

Analysis:
Chad Brown is one of the best young trainers in North America, and he'll send out the turf-bred KAILA ANN'S KITTEN if that one can escape the also-eligible list.  Last year, Brown's 7-1 shot Maram scored in her debut at Saratoga en route to an undefeated season that culminated in the  Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. This year, the barn's Kid Kate won her debut in an off-the-turf maiden special weight at the Spa.  It looks as though Kaila Ann's Kitten has been working regularly in company with Kid Kate, and she may have enough talent to overcome a tough outside post position at a price.
PRETTY B., a half-sister to the quality Grade 1 winner Lear's Princess, was bumped at the start of her career debut on turf at Belmont, and then was forced to rally four wide turning into the stretch.  She finished well enough for second, and certainly wasn't disgraced last time when her second start was rained off the weeds.  The two sprints to a route move should work in her favor, and experience always seems to count in these juvenile turf heats.
ISN'T SHE GRAND is out of a half-sister to Stormy Atlantic, a fleet sprinter that has blossomed into an excellent turf sire.  Isn't She Grand should be legged up for this route as her last five published moves have been between five and seven furlongs.
BEAUTIFUL SONG has a strong pedigree, and can be forgiven her debut try at Churchill Downs, a dirt sprint contested over sloppy conditions.  She can move forward off that peformance for excellent barn.
DAD'S CRAZY and MAUX MONEY finished noses apart when they finished behind Pretty B at Belmont.  The former should save valuable ground from her inside post position while Maux Money's most recent try on dirt can be safely disregarded.  CLASSIC AFFAIR makes career debut for Todd Pletcher, but Pletcher's go-to rider, John Velazquez, sticks with entrymate Dad's Crazy. SARATOGA FLING and GENUINE CHARM didn't have an easy time of it in their respective debuts, and both can move forward if this race is rained to the main track.  COQUINA BAY may be a late-developing type that can move forward as the distances increase.  CRYSTAL OCEAN only sold for $17,000 as a yearling, and the workouts fail to entice, but she does have a strong turf pedigree.  HOUSE OF GRACE may need a start. QUANTITATIVEEASING tired badly in her debut on dirt, and doesn't show a published workout in the last 17 days.  JUMP STAR might benefit from a race.  OUTWARD APPEARANCE has been working steadily since mid-May for her unveiling.  WAYNETTA must improve on her dull dirt showings.

Analysis:
DASHING DEBBY caught the eye of prominent owner Jess Jackson after the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro whipped stakes foes by over ten lengths in her career debut.  She was brought to Saratoga following the private purchase, turned over to trainer Steve Asmussen, and may simply be the dominant speed in the Adirondack.
BEAUTICIAN ran a nice race in defeat behind the Asmussen-trained Hot Dixie Chick on Opening Day in the Schuylerville, and can certainly move forward off that effort.  Expect her to be closer to the pace here.
CAMILLE'S APPEAL gets the acid test after utilizing a sustained bid to defeat restricted company at Lone Star Park.  Trained by Asmussen, she figures to benefit if the pace is very fast.
SASSY IMAGE finished behind Beautician in the career debut on June 5 at Churchill Downs, but returned to whip maidens under the Twin Spires by almost six lengths.  She's fast enough to find a decent stalking spot while in the clear.
DECELERATOR missed the break in the Schuylerville, was rushed up into contention, and understandably tired.  She deserves another chance for Mr. Lukas.
BABAI BABY went gate to wire in her maiden race at Belmont, but will likely have to stalk with the speedy Dashing Debby in the lineup.  WORSTCASESCENARIO pushed moderate splits when winning her debut as the public's choice, but probably will have to go faster in the first quarter-mile here.  MAGIC APPEAL wheels back on seventeen days notice after a solid maiden win over this track.  WORSHIP THE MOON stalked and pounced her way to victory at Monmouth, but will need a Beyer boost in this tougher spot. MARABELLE is a maiden tackling some tough winners.
