Spa Babies for 8/12

Email

Welcome to Spa Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet.
Hopefully, we'll end up with a tidy profit.

Monday's result:
Race 2 - Happy Week scratched; second choice Proud Zoe finished first

Week 1 Recap:  12-2-5 (- $6.50)
Both good and bad wagering luck were thrown into the opening week mix.  Kid Kate was a SpaBaby top selection, but the bet on her nose became moot when her race was rained off the grass.  She won anyway at 9-2 odds.  Fortune smiled on us on Monday afternoon as top selection Eire's Kid ran poorly, but was bailed out in the wagering portion by 5-1 entrymate Ibboyee.  The quest for our fourth straight profitable Spa Baby summer sits at -$6.50.

Week 2 Recap:  9-2-5 (+18.30)
Turned a 7-10 shot into a $36.40 exacta on Friday when Punta Nizac completed the number at 22-1 odds. That's been the defining race of our meet thus far, but it's gotten us into the black.

Meet record based on starts, wins, top pick (after scratches) in the money, and profit/loss of that day's play ($2 wager): 21-4-10 (+11.90)

Analysis:  BACK BACK BACK, a $100,000 yearling purchase, makes career debut for top first-out barn, and shows a three-furlong blowout following a trifecta of longer workouts. The stakes-winning dam won her debut by 11 lengths at Del Mar with an 82 Beyer Speed Figure back in 1996.
SWASHBUCKLER worked a quarter-mile in under 21 seconds prior to being purchased at OBS in February, and the unraced dam is a half-sister to the fleet Diabolical, the winner of the Grade 2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga with a 107 Beyer.  Diabolical also won his career debut by 9 1/2 lengths with a 91 speed figure.
HOPEFUL BOY attracts the services of John Velazquez, and that's somewhat notable since Velazquez is the go-to rider for Todd Pletcher.  The July 21 workout looks solid enough, and Zito is overdue with his debut runners.
GOOD TO BE SEEN showed decent early speed when well-bet for his unveiling at Belmont, but was no match for the promising Not Macho Any More.  He should be leaving on a mission once again, but figures to take a good amount of mutuel play, and must show greater stamina.
ASPIRE is a son of the excellent debut sire Tale of the Cat, and Eddie Kenneally is an underrated source of first-out winners.  GRAND STRATEGY wouldn't be a surprise as he was the third-highest lot at the May juvenile auction, but Eurosilver has gotten off to a slow start at stud, and the Kiaran McLaughlin babies have disappointed thus far at the meet.

Selections:  1.  Back Back Back  2.  Swashbuckler  3.  Hopeful Boy

The Play:  Back Back Back to Win and Place at 4-1 odds or greater

Analysis:  PORKCHOP SANDRA makes career debut for barn that usually gears juveniles up for the Spa season. The promising young sire won his first three starts as a juvenile, including his career debut at the Spa by 7 1/2 lengths with a 94 Beyer Speed figure.
OPUS A also goes out for a barn that does excellent work with Spa Babies, and the August 2 workout looks pretty interesting.  The dam's half-brother, Z Fortune, won first-out as a juvenile with a 93 Beyer.
SPIRIT OF ROSE's trainer, Linda Rice, has started off the meet with a bang, and this daughter of City Zip shows a pair of solid five-furlong moves leading up to her debut.
TAPALINE exits the slower division of statebred maiden special weights at Belmont on July 22, but has done little wrong in her short career, and wouldn't be a surprise for John Kimmel.
FREUD'S NOTEBOOK comes out of the faster division on July 22.  She took some money that day, and is certainly capable of improvement with that debut experience under her girth.  DREAM TRAIN wheels back in only 12 days for the great Allen Jerkens, and her first race over the Saratoga strip represented an improvement off her career debut at Belmont when behind Freud's Notebook.  MYSTIC CITY shows some good works at Finger Lakes for high-percentage barn.  DUGOUT DEPUTY showed speed in her debut before faltering in the lane.  She is bred for longer distances on the top of her pedigree, but is capable of pressing the pace once again here.  SUAVECITO may have the best early speed of this bunch, but her stamina abandoned her in her career debut behind Tapaline.  PRECIOUS PENNY's are quick, but they fail to excite.  KRISBEALADY offers depth to the Galluscio entry, but there are no published workouts in the last 19 days.  NURSE DOLCE goes out for barn that broke a long drought with juvenile debut runners with a winner earlier in the meet.  Note the 15-day gap between the last two published moves.  SELENAS SO MAD must break in from the also-eligible list.

Selections:  1.  Porkchop Sandra  2.  Opus A  3.  Spirit of Rose

The Play:  Porkchop Sandra (half of entry) to Win and Place at 9-2 odds or greater
