Sovereign media finalists named

EmailThe Jockey Club of Canada, which organizes and hosts the annual Sovereign Awards, announced the three finalists in each of four media categories on Friday.

The finalists for newspaper article, feature story, photograph, and film/video/broadcast were chosen from a list of submissions by a panel of independent judges.

Woodbine-based Michael Burns Jr. is among the finalists for this year's Sovereign Award in the outstanding photograph category. The Burns photograph, of a solitary horse on the Woodbine backstretch at sunrise, appeared on the front page of the Toronto Star on Oct. 14. David Landy and Cindy Pierson Dulay are the other nominees.

Jennifer Morrison, a freelance contributor to Daily Racing Form and other publications, is a finalist for a Toronto Star story on jockey Jerry Baird.

Bruce Walker, author of a Northern Dancer article that also appeared in the Toronto Star, and Allan Besson, nominated for a piece in the Winnipeg Free Press, are the other newspaper article finalists.

The feature story finalists are Chris Lomon, of the Woodbine Entertainment Group's media communications department, for his piece on the late Avelino Gomez in the Queen's Plate souvenir edition published by Canadian Thoroughbred Magazine.

Dave Briggs, whose story on the late E.P. Taylor appeared in a regular edition of Canadian Thoroughbred Magazine, and Paul Wiecek, whose tale of trainer Martin Drexler appeared in the Winnipeg Free Press, are the other feature story finalists.

The film/video/broadcast finalists are Woodbine Entertainment Group, for its Queen's Plate broadcast; Horse Racing Alberta and White Iron Productions, for its Alberta Derby show; and Tommy Wolski, for an episode of his Vancouver-based "Sport of Kings" television show.

The 33rd annual Sovereign Awards ceremony will be held Friday, Dec. 14, at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto.
