Sovereign Default to get chance in Hopeful
Email
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Sovereign Default, who was scratched out of the Grade 2 Saratoga Special, blew out three furlongs in 36.55 seconds Tuesday morning over the main track in preparation for a start in the Grade 1 Hopeful on Monday. He galloped out a half-mile in 48.80 seconds.
Sovereign Default was a first-out winner at Belmont in July, winning a 5 1/2-furlong race in 1:03.79 and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 94. Trainer Rick Violette said Sovereign Default was going through a growth spurt around the time of the Special and he wanted to give him more time.
“I like what I’ve seen,” Violette said. “Right now we’re pointing for the Hopeful. The competition is significant.”
Among those expected for the Hopeful are Boys at Tosconova, Settle for Medal, Stay Thirsty, and Wine Police.
On Tuesday, Stay Thirsty worked five furlongs in 1:00.87 over the main track in company the 2-year-old maiden Maple Forest, while Settle for Medal went four furlongs in 48.23 seconds by himself.
Best Bets
MILES HEIR jumps three levels to $16k claiming after crushing $8k claimers by more than eight. The in-form gelding was claimed from Kristin Mulhall by Doug O'Neill, who will strike while the iron is hot. On paper, he is the most probable winner on the card. NO STADIUM, meanwhile, is going the other way. That is, down. He drops from $32k claiming, but has run races on this track that obviously put him in the hunt. TIZ LIBERTY may be better than his most-recent last-place finish indicates. A lightly raced 4-year-old gelding, his main-track form two starts back puts him in the picture.
