Southoftheborder due for breakthrough

Southoftheborder has the chance to shine in a stakes at Suffolk Downs as the blue-collar Massachusetts-bred mare starts her 2009 campaign in the $50,000 Isadorable Stakes.

The statebred sprint for fillies and mares is part of a strong, allowance-race-filled card.

Southoftheborder has carved out more than $133,000 in earnings, mostly through smaller checks earned running behind the dominant females in New England. She was second in this race last year behind New England-bred champion Flirt for Fame and has finished behind either her or returning rival Ask Queenie in all 12 stakes starts since 2006.

Ask Queenie is back on a week's rest, after finishing 10th against males in the Rise Jim Stakes. It was the first time in 24 statebred stakes starts that she finished out of the money.

For owner/trainer/breeder Lloyd Lockhart, it may finally be Southoftheborder's turn, but he is not dismissing Ask Queenie.

"I know my horse is sharp, but I saw Queenie this morning, and she looks pretty sharp too," he said.

Southoftheborder is better going longer distances and likes turf, but her sharpness and the presence of half-sister and entrymate Innocent Kip should help going six furlongs.

Also in the field is Glory Be Good, who won this race in 2004, but has not raced in four years.

In addition to the Isadorable, there are four allowance races, with the sixth featuring stakes-caliber horses going a mile on the main track.
