Southern Tour wins Carousel


HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Southern Tour, the stalker in a short field of front-runners, rallied past favorite Spanish Glitter in midstretch to win the $100,000 Carousel Breeders' Cup by 2.50 lengths Sunday at Oaklawn Park. The order of finish in the four horse field was completed by Powder and Miss Seffens.

Southern Tour($12.40) settled about 1.50 lengths behind pacesetter Spanish Glitter, who ran the opening quarter of the six-furlong race for fillies and mares in a blazing 21.36 seconds while under pressure from Powder. Southern Tour angled to the outside of her rivals at the top of the stretch then ran down the leaders, drawing 2.50 lengths clear in 1:10.58.

Jockey Anthony Lovato rode Southern Tour for owner Earl Bellamy and leading trainer Cole Norman. She earned $60,000 for the win, her first in a stakes, to improve her bankroll to $204,080.
