Southern invaders look dominant in Tejano Run

Saturday's $50,000 Tejano Run Stakes has one of Turfway Park's best stakes fields since last fall. Aided by improving local weather and by Fair Grounds and Gulfstream Park nearing the end of their meets, the race drew a full field of 12.

Three of the entries - Tahkodha Hills, Frazee's Folly, and Two Point Two Mill - come to Kentucky after wintering in the South. After racing against challenging company at Fair Grounds and Gulfstream, all three figure prominently in the 1 1/8-mile Tejano Run.

Tahkodha Hills, a 5-year-old son of Prospector's Halo who finished third in the Grade 1 Florida Derby two years ago, is the horse to beat. A multiple stakes winner of more than $518,000, he enters the Tejano Run in quality form. Last month at Fair Grounds, he rallied from a disadvantageous outside post to finish second, beaten a nose by Miner's Prize.

Previously this winter he finished eighth in the Whirlaway Stakes and third in the Diplomat Way at Fair Grounds. Trainer Merrill Scherer has named Craig Perret to ride Tahkodha Hills, who breaks from post 1.

Frazee's Folly, trained by Niall O'Callaghan, heads the opposition. Like Tahkodha Hills, he was unsuccessful in stakes company at Fair Grounds this winter but should be a force against weaker at Turfway. In his last Kentucky race, Frazee's Folly won a $59,100 allowance race at Churchill Downs.

He finished eighth, 2 1/4 lengths behind Tahkodha Hills, when they met in the Diplomat Way Jan. 20. Tony D'Amico rides.

Two Point Two Mill is the lone south Florida shipper in the Tejano Run. He returns to the main track after a runner-up finish on grass. Earlier this winter, he won a third-level allowance at Gulfstream in a race transferred from turf to dirt.

Other contenders in a wide-open Tejano Run include Unbridled Time, a stakes winner of over $305,000 who has struggled at Aqueduct recently, and the hot local horse Golden Oldie, a five-length winner of the one-mile Dust Commander Stakes at Turfway Feb. 16.

The Tejano Run goes as the 10th race on a deep 12-race card. Post time is 5:16 p.m.
