Southern Africa's class prevails


POMONA, Calif. - Southern Africa, the only graded stakes winner among eight starters in the $123,750 Ralph M. Hinds Pomona Handicap, won the centerpiece race of the Los Angeles County Fair on Sunday by a half-length over Top this and That.

Jon Court rode Southern Africa ($9.20) for trainer Mike Puhich. Racing about 1 1/8 miles in 1:52.19, Southern Africa won for the first time since the Grade 3 Lone Star Derby in May 2005. Longshot Itstufftobegood finished third; 2-1 favorite Stormin Away finished fifth. Skipaslew and He's the Rage scratched.

Southern Africa, whose first three starts were in England, is owned by Al and Sandee Kirkwood and has won five races and $706,693.

o Jungle Prince ($7) won the $63,700 Governor's Handicap for the second consecutive year, beating Jet West by a neck in the 6 1/2-furlong race. Captain Squire, the 3-2 favorite, set a fast pace and finished third. Agapito Delgadillo rode Jungle Prince for trainer Juan Garcia. Jungle Prince was racing for the first time since winning the Phoenix Gold Cup in March at Turf Paradise. He has won 7 of 26.
