South American jockey Ricardo passes 12,000-win mark

Argentine jockey Jorge Ricardo became the first rider to surpass 12,000 wins on May 26 in Buenos Aires. Ricardo, 51, a native of Brazil, rides primarily in Argentina. He won the 10,000th race of his career in 2008 and reached the 11,000-win mark in 2010.

Ricardo has won more than 160 Group 1 races in South America. He won a record 477 races in a single-season in Brazil in 1993 and a record 467 races in one year in Argentina in 2008.

Russell Baze, the all-time winningest rider in North America, is nearing the 12,000-win milestone.

Through Monday, Baze, a Hall of Famer who is based in Northern California, has 11,956 wins. Monday, Baze had four wins at Golden Gate Fields.

On the North American list, Hall of Famer Laffit Pincay, Jr., is second with 9,530 wins.

First Jorge Ricadro Won # 12,000 on Sunday! A little background info on Jorge In 2009 he battled & beat Cancer. HE'S A CANCER SURVIVOR! Jorge Aged 51 will be 52 30th September. He miss a year of riding due to cancer! I'm feed up with US Racing & only wager/watch races with my favorite US jockey & racing from South Africa, Argentina & Austraila. I can tell you that racing in Argentina is very competive & Jorge brings in both favorites & long shots. He is an AMAZING Jockey. I've been posting to my FB page & Twitter account daily Photos w/ how many wins away he was from 12,000. When he won #12,000 I was over the moon! I checked DRF,Equibase & The Blood-Horses' websites & there's was nothing about The Planets Winningest Jockey Winning #12,000 Until Monday! Which is Unacceptable! If R. Baze had gotten to 12,000 1st. you would've heard about it that day & 1 of them made sure to let you know that R. Baze has 1 more win this year than Jorge what it doesn't tell you is Jorge went on an extended Christmas holiday & didn't resume riding until 11 January 2013! I've been trying to get US fans to watch & appreciate International Racing. Other than Frankel & Black Caviar & Yes I Love both of them! There are large fields, quality & competive racing. If anyone is interested I can tell you websites to watch racing from Austraila, Argentina & Chile for free. I'm sad that Mr. Jorge A. Ricardo's 12,000th Win was not giving the press it should of gotten! I Can't Wait For Him To Reach #13,000! Go Jorge Go! He 1 of my heroes not only as a jockey but as an inspiration for not letting Cancer beat him & returning to race riding! Which we all know is not easy! Congrats To Mr. Jorge A. Ricardo!

Nobody is interested as evidenced by the miniscule mutuel pools in the countries you mention.

every horse baze gets on is 9/5 on less in a short field of 6 horses. ricardo ride all price horses in fields of 10 or more

Give it up . Every horse Baze sits on is not 9/5 . Ricardo doesn't ride all price horses. Hey he has a lot of wins can't knock that but knocking Russel BaZe is stupid.

You can bad mouth Baze and Ricardo all you want, but to be able to even ride in that many races, never mind win, is amazing to me.

Wonder if Ricardo`s average win price is lower than Baze`s whose wins on favs in small field tracks like GG and others have made him THE chosen jockey among their leading trainers,,but not much of a value since the fav$ lose more than about 60%,, still ,,FIVE HUNDRED WINS [500] a year is pretty good in his 50`s.Curiously he`s Never Ridden in the A merican big tracks,,how come,Jorge??Que pasa ??

Fantastic achievment. Baze too. But there will only be one Lester Piggott. No one is close to The Maestro.

Have to agree with you on that, Lester Piggott was in a league of his own

While they are many great jockeys here in the USA not one could compare to mr. Ricardo. Some may argue Russell Baze, which is a great jockey and at his age continues to dominate. However, Mr. Ricardo riding in Argentina where there is 15 horse fields is pretty amazing. That puts any jockey here riding 4,5,6 and even 7 horse fields to shame. They do not mention the name of the horse which he set this amazing record on, nor do they show a picture of him. Shame on you DRF. Congrats Mr. Ricardo

There was a picture in the original article that wasn't on the front page. Of C-horse most of you Tweeters don't read past the headlines on the front page before you start commenting.
