Sousaphone ships in to score


Sousaphone ($3.80) made her first trip to Ohio to face statebred fillies and mares wortwhile when she won the $50,000 Vivacious Handicap at River Downs on Saturday.

Trained by Michelle Nihei, Sousaphone made a big move under jockey Edgar Paucar to take the lead in upper stretch, dueled with second-place finisher Mini Mom, and began to draw clear late to win by three-quarters of a length. Holly the Dud was 3 3/4 lengths back in third.

Sousaphone ran t1 1/16 miles over a firm turf course in 1.42.3.

o Chilliness ($111.40), under Azael De Leon, raced along the hedge and got through in upper stretch to draw off and win a $25,000 allowance that serves as the local prep for the Miller Lite Cradle by 1 3/4 lengths.

Trained by Bruce Waltermire, Chilliness made it 2 for 2 lifetime, after winning a maiden race June 7 at Churchill Downs by a disqualification. Appalachian Trail, trained by Tim Hamm, led in upper stretch but could not go with the winner late. Night Action was third.

Chiliness ran a mile over a firm turf course in 1.37.0. The first three finishers can now supplement to The Cradle on Labor Day for $3,000.
