Souris charges to Safely Kept win

Nelson Bunker Hunt's Souris takes advantage of a fast pace up front to rally from last and win the $52,600 Safely Kept Stakes by a length on Monday at Arlington Park.

With a last-to-first move, Souris won the $52,600 Safely Kept Stakes on Monday at Arlington by a length.

The favorite, Summer Mis, stumbled at the start of the Safely Kept, and instead of racing on a clear lead, she dueled with Maple Syrple through an opening quarter-mile in 21.91 seconds. Souris still was last on the far turn, as Summer Mis got a half-mile in 45.11 seconds and put away Maple Syrple. Asked for run at the eighth pole, Summer Mis came up empty, and Smoke Chaser, stalking the early leaders, briefly looked like a winner. But Souris and jockey Eddie Martin came charging between horses to win going away.

Souris, the second-longest choice in a six-horse field, paid $16.80 to win, running six furlongs in 1:10.25.

Owned by Nelson Bunker Hunt, Souris ran Monday in the name of Toby Sheets, an assistant trainer to Steve Asmussen, who is serving a suspension.
