Sothern Yankee gives Saenz a stakes double

Jockey Diego Saenz recorded a stakes riding double this weekend at Evangeline Downs, following up his Friday night win in the Inaugural Stakes on Code of Honour with a runaway victory Saturday night aboard Southern Yankee in the $50,000 Hallowed Dreams Stakes.

Longshot Scared Psalm finished second in the 5 1/2-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies, nine lengths behind Southern Yankee. Reckon finished third.

"She broke well and relaxed nicely for me," Saenz said. "When the filly who was leading early began to stop, she went right by her entering the turn and just pulled away as easy as could be. I was basically just a passenger tonight."

Southern Yankee ($5.80) is trained by Olivo Inirio and won for the fifth time in nine starts and now has earnings of more than $173,000. She was timed in 1:04.22 over a fast track.
