Sorority to Feline Story

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Feline Story took charge at the top of lane and drew off to a 5 3/4-length win in the Grade 3, $100,000 Sorority Stakes Saturday afternoon at Monmouth Park.

Feline Story ran the six furlongs in 1:10.93 over the wet-fast track to take Monmouth's premier event for 2-year-old fillies and give Jose C. Ferrer a rare double.

He became the first jockey since Jacinto Vasquez to sweep the Sapling and the Sorority, the track's top juvenile stakes, in one year.

In 1974, Vasquez scored with Foolish Pleasure in the Sapling and Ruffian in the Sorority.

Ferrer earlier captured the Sapling with Dashboard Drummer.

He rode a filly Saturday who was clearly the best. Feline Story ($4.80), the winner of the Astoria Stakes at Belmont Park, stalked a fast pace set by Fashion Girl. Feline Story launched her move with a half-mile to run.

"I didn't want to move that early but I didn't want to get stuck down inside either," Ferrer said. "Once I asked her, she took off. Game over."

Whirlwind Charlott rallied for second with Stand on Top third.

* Only the Best ($6.80) rallied for his second straight Monmouth stakes win in the $50,000 Select Stakes for 3-year-olds on the turf. The winner of the Anderson Fowler Stakes, Only the Best got up by a nose over Special Judge in 55.95 for the five furlongs.

Carlos Cruz was aboard for his fourth winner of the afternoon.
