Somethinaboutlaura, Victorina meet in stakes

EmailSAN MATEO, Calif. - The $60,000-added Luck Be a Lady Handicap on Saturday at Bay Meadows matches the top two females based in Northern California - Somethinaboutlaura and Victorina.

The six-furlong sprint, which attracted seven fillies or mares, will be the first time the two have met. Others in the field include stakes winners Royal Kleven and Kalookan Dancer, and Victory Script, who brings a seven-race win streak into the race.

But the center of attention will be the two graded-stakes-winning fillies, Somethinaboutlaura, who scored a repeat victory in the Grade 2 A Gleam at Hollywood Park on July 6 in her last start, and Victorina, who won the Grade 3 Azalea at Calder last summer. Between them, they have 17 stakes wins in 34 stakes appearances. Somethinaboutlaura has 11 wins, 4 seconds, and 3 thirds in 22 stakes appearances. Victorina has 6 wins, 3 seconds, and 1 third in 12 stakes appearances.

Victorina has a recency advantage over Somethinaboutlaura, having won the Vacaville Handicap and an $80,000 optional claimer in her last two starts. Victorina loves this track, with a win and a second in two starts here. She has 7 wins and 2 seconds in 10 tries at the six-furlong distance.

Somethinaboutlaura, who drew the rail, is unbeaten in five starts on the main track here, including a pair of 5 1/2-furlong sprints here early in her career. She is 2 for 2 at six furlongs on the dirt. Somethinaboutlaura was scratched in the post parade when she was going to meet males in the California Turf Championship here on Aug. 25. She was lame in her left front leg, trainer and co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer said.

"We checked her thoroughly but could never pinpoint what was wrong," he said.

Hollendorfer said he plans to run the 5-year-old Somethinaboutlaura in the Nov. 3 California Cup at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.

"We've been looking for a race," he said.

Hollendorfer said he was pleased with her last work, a five-furlong drill in a bullet 59.80 seconds.

Both Victorina and Somethinaboutlaura are stalkers, and Kalookan Dancer and Victory Script figure to vie for the lead.

Kalookan Dancer won the Pio Pico at Fairplex in her last start. Royal Kleven returned from nearly seven months off to win her last start.
