SAN MATEO, Calif. - Somethinaboutlaura ($8.20) made her first start on the turf and around two turns a winning one as she captured the $75,650 at Bay Meadows on Saturday.

Somethinaboutlaura sat just behind Bad Anne, made a good move into the stretch and then held off odds-on Conveyor's Angel to with the 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies by three-quarters of a length. Her winning time was 1:43.30.

"Those are two things a handicapper doesn't like to see," winning trainer said about the surface and distance shifts, "but she's not supposed to have done anything she's done so we decided to take a shot."

Somethinaboutlaura, who won four sprints earlier this year, won the race early when she was content to take a stalking role.

"Like everyone, I expected her to be on the lead, but Russell (Baze) read the situation well," Miyadi said.

"Half way around the first turn, she dropped the bit and relaxed nicely," Baze said. "When she galloped by the leader and took the lead, she got to goofing off in the lane, and I had to keep her mind on running."

Somethinaboutlaura eared $44,050 for her first stakes victory. She has now earned $106,580 with five wins in seven starts.
