Somethinaboutlaura hits million mark

EmailOdds-on Somethinaboutlaura ($3) attained millionaire status with a half-length victory in Saturday's $75,000 Pacific Heights Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.

The 5-year-old mare earned $45,000 for her victory, lifting her career earnings to $1,008,865.

"Our strategy was to go to the front and lead all the way, but Special Heather was going a little faster than I wanted so I sat off her," winning jockey Russell Baze said.

Sitting an easy second didn't bother Somethinaboutlaura, who eased to the front on the second turn in the 1 1/16-mile race. She had an open lead in the lane and was not asked hard as she wound up a half-length in front of Swiss Current. The winning time was 1:44.93.

Swiss Current's jockey, Carlos Gonzalez, said, "If I had been able to let her run a little sooner, I think I would have got the winner."

But Baze disagreed, saying, "She eased herself to the lead and responded when I asked her. I didn't ask her for her best today."

Winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, also a co-owner, said, "She's made the goals we put out for her - to be a graded stakes winner and win a million dollars."

Somethinaboutlaura owns back-to-back wins in the Grade 2 A Gleam Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Saturday's victory was Somethinaboutlaura's 17th in 30 career starts. Charles Miller, John Sikura, and George Todaro are also co-owners with Hollendorfer.
