Somethinaboutlaura dominates Pacific Heights

ALBANY, Calif. - Odds-on Somethinaboutlaura ($2.60) had things her own way as she set a fast but comfortable pace to score an easy victory in the $75,000 Pacific Heights Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

The 4-year-old filly, who won the Grade 2 A Gleam Handicap at Hollywood Park on July 1, opened a length on Jill's Sky into the first turn and maintained the advantage down the backstretch. Jill's Sky tried to challenge on the second turn when jockey Russell Baze let a notch out on Somethinaboutlaura, who responded willingly and pulled away from the field of Cal-bred fillies and mares. She defeated Royal Kleven by four lengths in 1:34.95.

"She's a nice filly to ride. She has a lot of class," Baze said. "She's got plenty of speed, but she's very relaxed. She's an easy horse to ride."

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, part of a group that paid $375,000 for her in February, felt confident watching the race unfold.

"I thought she looked quite comfortable down the backside," he said. "She went at a pretty good clip, then finished up nicely."

Somethinaboutlaura, who will now be pointed to the $150,000 Matron at Cal Cup, earned $41,250 to lift her career earnings to $410,985 with her eighth victory in 17 starts. She has earned $236,155 since her purchase.
