Some overlap in Texas dates

There are some minor overlaps in the proposed 2006 racing calendars from Lone Star Park, Sam Houston Race Park, and Retama Park, according to the dates requested from the Texas Racing Commission.

Lone Star has requested a 66-date Thoroughbred meet from April 13 to July 23, while Sam Houston has asked for a spring Thoroughbred meet that runs 43 days, from Jan. 6 through April 15. The proposals overlap for two dates, April 14-15.

Sam Houston has asked for 24 dates of Thoroughbred racing in the fall, from Oct. 27 through Dec. 16. Retama Park, meanwhile, has asked to run 47 Thoroughbred dates, from Aug. 11 through Oct. 28, overlapping with Houston on Oct. 27-28.

Conflicting race dates for the same breed at major tracks in Texas cannot be granted unless shared dates are agreed to in writing by the tracks. As of Friday, the deadline for date submissions, no agreement was in place, according to the racing commission.

The proposed Quarter Horse calendar has Retama requesting a 24-date meet from April 28 through June 16, Sam Houston asking for 38 dates from June 23 through Sept. 9, Lone Star proposing 32 dates from Oct. 6 through Dec. 12, and the yet-to-be constructed Austin Jockey Club asking for nine days, from Dec. 15 through Dec. 31.

Manor Downs, near Austin, has asked for 18 mixed-racing dates for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, from March 4 through April 30.
