Soft fractions help Jarf get the job done

Front-runner Jarf hadn't been able to carry his speed far enough to win a race since last March. Able to set a modest pace early under jockey Clinton Potts, Jarf ($8.60) wired a field of five older horses by 3 1/2 lengths in the $100,000 Kelso Stakes at Delaware Park.

Unhurried through fractions of 48.48 seconds, 1:12.59, and 1:37.86 for the mile, the only anxious moment for Jarf came with about a furlong remaining in the 1 3/16-mile race when he and 4-5 favorite Acrolect took turns brushing against each other. Acrolect steadied briefly and his jockey, Mike McCarthy, claimed foul, but it was disallowed by the stewards.

The 6-year-old Jarf, making his first start in six weeks, covered the distance in 1:57.51 over a fast main track.
