Society Selection wins

Society Selection overcame traffic problems around the far turn to score an impressive-looking three-length win over Bending Strings in the Grade 3, $112,000 Comely Stakes at Aqueduct on Friday.

It was Society Selection's first win since the Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont Park on Oct. 4. In two starts this year in Gulfstream Park stakes, Society Selection had lost as the favorite.

Society Selection, the 8-5 favorite under Jorge Chavez, was racing in last with no running room around the far turn in the one-mile Comely for 3-year-old fillies. Chavez was able to swing her to the outside and she easily picked off her seven rivals in the stretch.

Daydreaming was third, 2 3/4 lengths behind Bending Strings.

Society Selection ($5.30) covered the distance in 1:35.89 over a fast track.

Society Selection is trained by Allen Jerkens and owned by her breeders, Irving and Majorie Cowan. Jerkens said he would prefer to await the $250,000 Acorn at Belmont Park on June 4, rather than send Society Selection to the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks April 30.
