So you like the chalk, 'Do Ya'

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Devil Will Do Ya figures to be a short-priced favorite over six other horses going 1 1/16 miles in a $35,000 claiming race for 3-year-olds and up at Hastings Park Saturday afternoon. This is the final weekend of live racing at Hastings this year, and both Saturday's and Sunday's cards filled with 10 races.

Devil Will Do Ya was sent off as the 3-5 favorite for the same price and distance Oct. 17 and he didn't disappoint his many backers, as he came from off the pace to score a one-length victory over Rim Dancer. His only other win came in his second start of the year, when he won a $25,000 optional race, also at 1 1/16 miles.

Before dropping in for his win over $35,000 claiming horses, he finished third in a $50,000 optional race Oct. 8. He went unplaced in three stakes this year. While he looks like a solid horse for chalk players, those trying to beat him will note that he is moving from the rail to the outside and he has never won on a wet track. He is trained by Rob VanOverschot and leading rider David Wilson has the call.

The pace should be quick with Spanish Banks in the field. From 19 lifetime starts, Spanish Banks has tried to go this far only once, and he finished last. He did have an excuse though, as he broke a step slowly and then forced the issue for six furlongs going three-wide. He's leaving from post 2, and if his recent form is any indication, he should have a clear lead. He has won five races this year, and the combination of trainer Steve Bryant and jockey Alan Cuthbertson has been potent lately.
