Snow causes several tracks to cancel racing

Most racetracks on the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic seaboard cancelled racing for Friday after a powerful snowstorm swept through on Thursday night.

Aqueduct Racetrack in New York, Laurel Park in Maryland, Charles Town in West Virginia, and Philadelphia Park in Pennsylvania all canceled their Friday daytime cards.

According to the national weather service, the storm had dropped at least half a foot of snow in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, and West Virginia by noon on Friday.

The snow was expected to taper off in most parts of the Northeast in the afternoon, the weather service said.

It was unclear how Saturday cards would be affected by the snow. In addition to the four tracks that cancelled on Friday, Suffolk Downs in Massachusetts and Mountaineer in West Virginia were scheduled to run live on Saturday.

Oaklawn Park in Arkansas and Turfway Park in Kentucky both planned to hold Friday cards as of noon.
