Smuggler, champion filly, retired

Smuggler, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2005, has been retired from racing, trainer Shug McGaughey said Thursday. She will be bred to Awesome Again.

McGaughey said Smuggler was suffering from some bruising in a hind cannon bone and would not be able to make it back for any of the important races this fall. The filly?s owner, Ogden Mills Phipps, wants to breed her next year.

Smuggler, a daughter of champions Unbridled and Inside Information, won 5 of 9 career starts and earned $654,352. Last year, she won the Mother Goose and Coaching Club American Oaks ? both Grade 1 events at Belmont Park ? and was crowned champion 3-year-old filly over Summerly and Round Pond. Smuggler also finished second in the Acorn.

This year, Smuggler only raced twice, finishing fifth in the Bed o? Roses Breeders? Cup Handicap at Aqueduct in April and third in the Shuvee at Belmont in May. Smuggler missed the Ogden Phipps Handicap because of illness and was injured in mid-July while training toward the Go for Wand at Saratoga.

?I wish we could?ve done a little more this year,? McGaughey said. ?I?m disappointed to see she?s gone. We never got see the best of her.?
