Smok'n Frolic wins Next Move

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Smok'n Frolic won Sunday's Next Move Handicap at Aqueduct for the second consecutive year and capped a huge weekend for jockey Richard Migliore, who rode Friends Lake to an upset in the $1 million Florida Derby on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Smok'n Frolic, the odds-on favorite, won the $108,400 Next Move by 6 1/2 length over Stake. It was another nose back to U K Trick in third in the 1 1/8-mile race for fillies and mares. Passing Shot, Virgin Voyage, Our Tune, and Green Jeans completed the order of finish.

Several of the runners didn't get off to smooth starts, including Smok'n Frolic, who stumbled and raced four-wide going into the first turn.

Our Tune set the pace through six furlongs run in 1:11.27. Smok'n Frolic got rolling approaching the quarter pole and drew off in the stretch.

"I wasn't thrilled with my trip on the first turn because I didn't like being four-wide," Migliore said. "Honestly, I couldn't do much about that. I felt like I was on the best horse. At least she was relaxed and settled, so I didn't have to get into a fight with her or get into her mouth. I just let her be happy and when I pushed the button coming to the quarter-pole, she responded. Good horses can be four-wide early and make the lead up by the quarter-pole and run on."

Smok'n Frolic ($3.60) covered the distance in 1:51.55 over a fast track.

Smok'n Frolic, a 5-year-old daughter of Smoke Glacken, is owned by Dogwood Stable and trained by Todd Pletcher.

With her win in the Grade 3 Next Move, Smok'n Frolic boosted her earnings to $1,441,540. Her record is 9-6-1 in 28 starts.
