Smok'n Frolic wakes up at Philly Park

In four starts this season, Smok'n Frolic hadn't come close to resembling the filly who won a pair of graded stakes and more than $340,000 last year.

Winless since last November, Smok'n Frolic ($20.80) regained her good form Saturday at Philadelphia Park, where she drew off to a 2 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $250,000 for 3-year-old fillies.

Jose Velez Jr., subbing for the injured Herberto Castillo, kept Smok'n Frolic back in seventh after the first half-mile, then asked his mount to loop the field turning into the stretch. Once Smok'n Frolic got rolling, she was never seriously threatened by runner-up Pupil. Smok'n Frolic covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.27.

The win gave trainer Todd Pletcher a sweep of Philly Park's two biggest races of the season. Pletcher also won the Pennsylvania Derby with Harlan's Holiday. No other trainer has ever won both stakes.

Jilbab, winner of the Coaching Club American Oaks in July, rallied mildly to finish third, 1 1/2 lengths in front of favored Alternate.

* Thunderello ($6.80), making his stakes debut for trainer Scott Lake, outdueled heavily favored Boston Common and pulled away to a 1 1/2-length victory in the $150,000 Gallant Bob Handicap for 3-year-old sprinters.
