Smokin Passion on streak

AUBURN, Wash. - Smokin Passion will attempt to extend her winning streak to four when she takes on half a dozen rivals in Friday's Emerald Downs feature, a six-furlong race for fillies and mares eligible to be claimed for $10,000.

Smokin Passion, a 4-year-old daughter of Petersburg from the barn of trainer Jim Penny, has been slumming at this meeting. Though she ran second against maiden special weight runners here last season, she began her current campaign on the $5,000 maiden level. She won that 5 1/2-furlong race by nearly three lengths as the 3-5 favorite, then came back to post a 9 1/2-length win over $4,000 nonwinners of two at the same 3-5.

In her most recent outing on July 5, Smokin Passion was bet down to 1-9 against $7,500 nonwinners of three, and won off by 3 1/2 lengths in 1:16.60 for 6 1/2 furlongs. She will be upping the claiming price and meeting open company for the first time on Friday, but she is a snug fit on the Beyer Speed Figure scale and is coming off a nifty five-furlong workout in 59.80 seconds on Monday.

Among Smokin Passion's more formidable opponents is Gold Deville, who is coming off a close second-place finish against $15,000 rivals on July 6, when she was beaten just a neck in 1:10 for six furlongs. Gold Deville, a 6-year-old trained by Pat Mullens, defeated $15,000 foes in her seasonal debut on May 3, but she is winless in six subsequent starts, prompting the price cut.
