CYPRESS, Calif. – Smokey Image, a five-time stakes winner who was seventh in the Santa Anita Derby on April 9, was not entered for Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile California Chrome Stakes at Los Alamitos and is likely to stay in sprints, trainer Carla Gaines said.

Gaines said on Thursday that one possible race for Smokey Image is the $100,000 Laz Barrera Stakes at seven furlongs for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita on May 14.

Owned by Irvin Racing Stable, Smokey Image was the California-bred champion 2-year-old male of 2015 when trained by Greg James. Smokey Image won four sprint stakes at 2. He won the California Cup Derby against statebreds at 1 1/16 miles in January, his first start for Gaines.

Smokey Image, by Southern Image, finished fifth in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles before the loss in the Santa Anita Derby, run at 1 1/8 miles.
