Smoken Sham caps big day for Root

Undefeated Smoken Sham ($3) rallied strongly to win his third straight race in the $21,050 Bill Wineberg Stakes, capping a big day for trainer Ben Root, who saddled three winners Monday during Oregon Championship Day at Portland Meadows.

In addition to Smoken Sham, Root saddled winners with Shame on Rosie ($6.60) in the $25,350 Janet Wineberg Stakes and Nikki S. ($3) in the $10,800 Hers. All three were favored.

Smoken Sham, pinched back early after breaking slowly, moved into contention on the turn in the Bill Wineberg for 2-year-olds. He quickly put away pacesetting Smart as Jim in the lane and held off Cascade Carson's late rally to win the six-furlong race by a half-length in 1:14.25.

Shame on Rosie was never headed as she romped to a six-length victory in the Janet Wineberg for 2-year-old fillies, covering six furlongs in 1:14.78. Rockhill Gold ran second.

Both Wineberg winners were sired by Seattle Shamus.

Gameshy ($39.40) got a great stalking trip and took advantage of a contentious pace duel between favored Ex Mountain Cop and Jimbos Fire Ant to win the $13,300 six-furlong Lethal Grande by 2 1/4 lengths over Brave Hearted in 1:12.62.

Favored Jacqueline's Angel ($6.60), a maiden going into the race, rallied from last to win the $11,475 His at 1 1/16 miles by a length over Thunder Thorn in 1:51.91.

Nikki S., last at the half-mile pole, closed nicely to defeat Purple Kaycee by 1 1/2 lengths in the one-mile Hers. Her winning time was 1:47.47.
