Smiling Tiger, winning the seven-furlong Triple Bend Handicap, will not have a prep race before the Breeders' Cup Sprint on Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs.

The next start for top California sprinter Smiling Tiger will be the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, according to trainer Jeff Bonde.

“He won’t race again until the Breeders’ Cup; he’ll train up to the race on works,” the trainer said this week from Keeneland.

Smiling Tiger has a history of running well fresh. July 2 at Hollywood Park, he won the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap with a 112 Beyer while making his first start in two months. But he regressed in two subsequent starts at Del Mar, including a fourth-place finish Aug. 28 as the favorite in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien in his most recent start. “He has little issues here and there,” Bonde said. “He didn’t uncork his race, but he came out of it okay. He went to the hyperbaric chamber, and he’s ready now (to resume training).” Smiling Tiger, 8 for 18, will train this fall at Santa Anita before shipping to Kentucky.
