Smarty Jones to stand at Calumet

Smarty Jones will return to Kentucky to stand at Calumet Farm.

Dual classic winner and champion Smarty Jones will return to Kentucky to stand at historic Calumet Farm in Lexington for the 2016 breeding season. 

The 14-year-old Elusive Quality horse most recently stood at Northview Stallion Station in his home state, Pennsylvania. Smarty Jones began his stud career at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., in 2005 before moving to stand at Ghost Ridge Farms in York, Pa., for the 2011 season. He moved to Northview, in Peach Bottom, Pa., a year later. 

Smarty Jones, who stood for $4,000 this past season in Pennsylvania, will get a fee hike to $7,500 at Calumet. He covered 49 mares in 2015.

From eight crops of racing age, Smarty Jones is the sire of 270 winners to date for earnings of $29,998,917, average earnings of $79,997 per runner. His 12 graded/group stakes winners are led by Grade 1 winner Centralinteligence; Grade 2 winners Old Time Hockey, Cary Street, and Backtalk; and Grade 3 winners Rogue Romance, Gilded Gem, Sunrise Smarty, and Nikkis Smartypants.

Smarty Jones bankrolled more than $7.6 million while winning eight of his nine career starts, including the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. His only loss came when second to Birdstone in the Belmont Stakes, his final career start.
