Smarty Jones on display

Smarty Jones will have a public training session at Philadelphia Park Saturday at 8:30 a.m. It follows by a week Smarty Jones's victory in the Preakness Stakes, which put him one step away from becoming the first Triple Crown winner in 26 years.

Smarty Jones had a similar public appearance at Philadelphia Park on May 8, a week after his victory in the Kentucky Derby. An estimated 5,000 fans showed up that day to watch Smarty Jones gallop with regular exercise rider Pete Van Trump. A larger crowd is anticipated this Saturday.

The track will open at 8 a.m., admission is free, and free coffee and donuts will be available. The food and beverage staff expects to provide 400 dozen donuts, 100 dozen soft pretzels, and 270 gallons of coffee.

Smarty Jones will have the track to himself during his gallop.

Hats, T-shirts, and pictures of Smarty Jones will be among the items available for purchase. Proceeds from souvenir items have been donated by Smarty Jones's owners, Roy and Patricia Chapman, to the Backstretch Relief Fund, which benefits hot walkers, exercise riders, and grooms. Sales already have generated more than $80,000 to the fund.
