Slots proposed for New York City

Email

Gov. George Pataki of New York recommended Tuesday, in a counterproposal to a state legislature-supported budget, that 4,500 slot machines be installed in three New York City Off-Track Betting parlors in Manhattan.

The plan, part of a larger budget proposal Pataki announced Tuesday, has not received much support from legislators, who last week passed a handful of budget bills under threat of a veto from Pataki. The legislature's budget bills included language supported by horsemen and New York racetracks that would reconfigure the amount of money tracks receive from slot machines at Aqueduct, Finger Lakes, and several New York harness tracks.

The New York Racing Association is expected to oppose Pataki's proposal.
