Slides Choice pulls clear

Slides Choice was kept just off the early pace by jockey Hector Rosario Jr. before taking the lead on the backstretch and then drawing off late to win the $100,000 Norm Barron Queen City Oaks at River Downs.

Trained by Tim Hamm, Slides Choice was challenged entering the stretch by runner-up Honey Be Fleet but held that rival at bay and drew off to win by 3 1/2 lengths.

"The filly runs as fast as she has to," Hamm said. "I was hoping the blinkers would make her spurt on, but she does what she has to do, that is her pretty much.

"I told Hector that if she did get clear early to be ready, she waits bad and you have to keep busy on her."

Hamm plans on sending Slides Choice, the 2008 Ohio Juvenile filly champion, to the Rose DeBartolo on Aug. 29 at Thistledown.

Gathering Dreams was third in the Queen City Oaks, 2 1/4 lengths behind Honey Be Fleet.

Slides Choice returned $2.60 to win and ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:58.20.
