Six starters give Glatt a full plate

ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainer Mark Glatt will have the busiest day of his career on Wednesday at Santa Anita when he has runners in six of the eight races.

"I think that's a personal high," Glatt said.

Glatt, 30, has starters in all but the second and sixth races, and has several contenders throughout the day. His runners range from claiming sprinters to a contender in the day's richest race, a $56,000 allowance/optional claimer at 1 1/16 miles.

Glatt may start with a winner when Crystal Forest runs in the first race, a six-furlong sprint with claiming prices ranging from $18,000 to $20,000. Crystal Forest, a 5-year-old mare, is making her first start for Glatt and owners Bill and Linear Bannach's Plan B Stable, having been claimed for $20,000 at Golden Gate Fields on Nov. 22.

"She had an abscess in her foot after we claimed her," Glatt said.

In the third race, Mamone stretches out from sprints to try a mile race against $28,000 to $32,000 claimers. The 4-year-old Mamone has drawn the outside post in a field of eight. "I think Mamone has a considerable shot on the stretchout," Glatt said.

In the fourth race, Runbeforethewind makes her second start, but drops in class from a maiden race for $62,500 claimers to the $32,000 level. She will run with blinkers added.

Glatt's fourth runner of the day is Azure Ciel in the fifth race, a one-mile race for $10,000 claimers. The 7-year-old Azure Ciel drops from a close third at the $12,500 level on Jan. 12.

The feature race is an optional claimer for California-breds. Evanders Challenge is entered to be claimed for $40,000, and is coming off a victory by 4 1/2 lengths against $20,000 claimers Jan. 20. The race marked his first start for Plan B Stable, which claimed the 8-year-old for $16,000 on Dec. 28.

"Evanders Challenge is awfully sharp right now," Glatt said. "He ran well in his first start off the claim. He's stepping up, but it seems like an easy California-bred race."

There are only seven entrants in the optional claimer, including Grand Visions, who was third at this level on Jan. 4.

Glatt's final runner is first-time starter Pacific Crest in the eighth race.

Through Sunday, Glatt had six winners at the meet, and was tied with several trainers for fifth place in the trainer standings.
