Six-stakes card caps meeting

AURORA, Colo. - Sunday's 10-race program closes out the 36-day Arapahoe stand. The card offers six stakes for several breeds and total purses of $333,847.

The stakes begin with the $35,532 Spicy Handicap for statebred fillies and mares in the third race. Vannacide and Ladysgotthelooks will vie for favoritism in the field of five. Vannacide bested Ladysgotthelooks by three-quarters of a length in this race last summer. Both are conditioned by Kenneth Gleason, and they are uncoupled in the wagering.

The $20,100 Cobra Classic Handicap for Arabian runners goes as the fourth race. The solid choice in the 1 1/8-mile test is S W Zell, trained by John Clements. The 7-year-old S W Zell is perfect in four starts at the meeing.

The 10 top Paint and Appaloosa qualifiers for the $35,150 Harvest Cup Futurity will compete in the fifth race over 350 yards. Favoritism in the wide-open affair will likely go to Treasure Your Dreams, the top qualifier in the July 30 trials with a time of 17.879.

The $66,715 Mile High Derby for Quarter Horses is the seventh. The solid choice in the 400-yard race is Vital Winner, trained by Bradley Bolen. He was the top qualifier (20.098) on July 29 and seeks his fifth straight win.

The eight race will feature Rasmussen, the top 2-year-old Thoroughbred to race here this summer. He is the overwhelming favorite in the $43,800 Gold Rush Futurity at six furlongs. Rasmussen, conditioned by leading trainer Jon Arnett, is perfect in three starts, all at Arapahoe, winning by a combined 25 lengths. His latest win came by eight lengths in the CTBA Futurity.

The $105,950 Mile High Futurity for Quarter Horses goes as the ninth event. John Hammes, the leading Quarter Horse trainer at the meet, qualified 3 of the 10 in the lineup for the 400-yard dash, including fastest qualifier Marvins Streaker. Marvins Streaker won his July 30 trial in 20.147.
