Sires take shot at rare Kentucky Oaks-Derby double

Email

Two-time leading sire Tapit and first-crop phenom Uncle Mo hold the strongest hands of the five stallions looking to pull off a rare Kentucky Derby-Kentucky Oaks double this week.

The last stallion to sire the Kentucky Oaks and Derby winner in the same year was the great Native Dancer, with Native Street and Kauai King in 1966.

Tapit and Uncle Mo have multiple horses in both the Derby and Kentucky Oaks. Tapit is represented by Royal Obsession and Taxable in the Oaks, going for his second victory in that race; and the trio of Mohaymen, Creator, and Lani in the Derby. Uncle Mo has Mokat and Mo d’Amour in the Oaks, and champion Nyquist, Outwork, and Mo Tom in the Derby.

The other stallions with representatives in both races are Curlin (Terra Promessa in the Oaks, Exaggerator in the Derby), Bernardini (Rachel’s Valentina and Lewis Bay in the Oaks, Shagaf in the Derby), and Mineshaft (Weep No More in the Oaks, Suddenbreakingnews in the Derby).
